It’s imperative for taxpayers to completely understand their tax returns. Never be afraid to ask questions.

You do NOT have to file a tax return if you normally are not required to. The IRS will be using 2019 Social Security payment information to send out stimulus checks. Update: March 20, 2020 11:54 am. The President has no announced that the FILING date is now postponed until July 15, 2020 matching the payment date. Still no word from New York State, state taxes are still due April 15th. The IRS has officially announced that they are extending the PAYMENT due date by 90 days. If you owe money to the IRS you now have until July 15, 2020 to pay them. However, the IRS did **NOT** extend the tax filing due date. That date is still April 15,... 2020. Failure to file results in a massive penalty if you owe money, regardless that the payment date is now July 15th. If you are entitled to a refund you should file sooner than later to receive your money in a timely manner. ****New York State has not issued any extensions at this time (March 19, 2020).
