Almosta Apiary

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I try and put up a few swarm boxes in the spring to hopefully 'capture' a few swarms. The studies indicate that the box show is a good size for that. I was a little complacent this year with a number of bee related activities including swarm box checking. Was at the friends house yesterday where this box is located and decided it was time to retrieve the box (mice seem to like them too if I leave them up too long) only to find honey bees had moved in (surprise). Decided there was no benefit to try and relocate them this late in the season. Put up some bracing to hopefully keep the box from tilting over the winter. Hopefully they survive and I'll have to cut them out in the spring. If I had monitored them and moved them shortly after they moved in it would have been a very simple transfer. Another lesson (hopefully) learned.

Fall honey is in. Bottling some honey bears and always interesting to see what it looks like. Summer on the left, fall on the right. Not as dark as some years but still looks good.
