With sadness, I say goodbye to a pioneer in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, Yehuda Ben-Yishay. Yehuda was my friend and mentor for almost 40 years, whose wisdom assisted me greatly in representing brain injury survivors. His depth of understanding of this invisible injury was unmatched. May he rest in peace. https://www.nytimes.com//health/yehuda-ben-yishay-dead.html

Thank you and congratulations to U.S. Reps. Bill Pascrell, Jr. of New Jersey and Don Bacon, Nebraska co-chairmen of the Congressional Traumatic Brain Injury Tas...k Force for the passage of their amendment to provide $5 million to support the National Concussion Surveillance System (NCSS). The NCSS is critical to accurately determining the incidence of concussions, particularly among the most vulnerable Americans. Rep. Pascrell’s Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Program Reauthorization Act of 2018 authorized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create the NCSS and the CDC implemented the program in late 2018. This amendment appropriates needed funding for the system. Brain injuries, are a silent epidemic in the United States. The CDC currently estimates that 2.5 million traumatic brain injuries occur each year in the U.S. and 5.3 million Americans live with a life-long disability as a result of TBI. But these numbers do not tell the full story. These statistics fail to take into account unreported concussions, individuals who have never sort medical attention, and hospital records where brain injury or concussion is not the principal diagnosis. It is impossible to know the true incident of brain injury and concussion without a robust surveillance system.

May is National Military Appreciation Month, an opportunity for Americans to honor veterans and active-duty members of our military services. This year, special... recognition is required for the active duty military personnel and national guard members protecting us during the from Covid-19 pandemic. Active-duty military personnel and our national guard staffed military hospital ships in New York City and Los Angeles harbors, and set up temporary hospitals in stadiums, convention halls, and New York’s Central Park and throughout our nation. We also must not forget the thousands of veterans who continue to struggle with service-related injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
