It's been almost 200 years since the first Norwegians emigrated to the U.S. Join us to learn the rarely told story via Zoom on Sunday, Jan 31, with storyteller Anne Elisebeth Skogen joining us on Zoom from Norway! This is a great way to prepare for the celebration in 2025, the National Jubilee of the Bicentennial of Norwegian Emigration. Since the Restauration left Stavanger for the U.S. with 52 Norwegian passengers in 1825, about 900,000 Norwegians have emigrated to North America and another 100,000 Norwegians have moved to locations throughout the world. Learn more about the planning of this 200 year celebration honoring this significant event in our international history: https://utvandrermuseet.no/en/2025

Join us to learn more about the mystery behind the Scandinavian Mayflower with Anne Elisebeth Skogen on January 31 at 1pm EST! Background to the story: The first Norwegian emigration group, left Norway July 4th 1825. Among the emigrants were men and women, young people and children. But who were this people and why did they leave their homes? What happened on the crossing of the Atlantic, and how was the arrival in New York?... When she (Anne Elisebeth) started to work with the story With Restauration through Hell Gate to The Promised Land, she first of all started reading whatever she could find of written sources about the emigration. One of the books was The Sloopers, written by Hart Rosdail. In 2010 she and her husband visited Historical Society in New York. There she was sitting with white gloves browsing and reading the original NY-newspapers from 1825 October 10th and 12th, about the arrival of Restauration. She also traveled the same route as the Sloopers from New York to Holley and Kendall. She tells: It was great to walk on the old tout path along the canal, and to walk in the canal aqueduct that cross Genesee River in Rochester. And that travel also is a source for the story. During the work she learned that the different Sloopers (the emigrants)- descendants have different versions of the same story. So sometimes she has had to select, and the finally story is her version.

Dear members, supporters and friends, At this time last year, memories of an elegant evening, dining and dancing were fresh in our minds. Sadly, the onset of the pandemic in March forced postponement of our beloved annual Scandinavian Christmas Ball. Our hearts go out to all those whose lives were adversely, and in some cases tragically, impacted. While the pandemic is not entirely behind us, we are looking forward to a brighter 2021.... It is 350 days until we are together at the next Annual Christmas Ball, December 3rd, 2021! We are planning and working to make it a joyous event once again at the Metropolitan Club. Save the date: https://fb.me/e/1aE5kNVS5 Please ensure you are a member in good standing for 2021. Given 2020’s challenges we look forward with enthusiasm to sharing a celebratory evening with you and your friends. From all of us at the American Scandinavian Society we join in offering our best wishes for the holidays, and for health and happiness throughout the coming year! See you next year, The Board Members of the American Scandinavian Society

Dear Members and Friends- Our Annual Christmas Ball is one of the highlights of our efforts and we have always felt it is the start of the Scandinavian Christmas season in New York. The onset of Covid-19 caused us to postpone many of our programs, but we held out hope that this traditional event could possibly be held. At this time, however, that due to the increased uncertainty of the progress of the virus, we have decided that the prudent thing is to postpone the Ball unti...l 2021. The Metropolitan Club has acknowledged that, December 3rd, 2021 will be the date. SAVE THIS DATE FOR OUR RETURN! In the meantime, please watch the webinars we are planning, The American Scandinavian Society Board See you in 2021: https://www.facebook.com/events/320580132650494/
