On Remembrance Day : Remembering the Fearless Lady, Countess Haig She was born Dorothy Maud Viviaen, a twin daughter to Lord Vivian in 1879, and in 1905, the year of her marriage to Field Marshall Haig she was privileged to be named Maid of Honor to Queen Victoria and in turn Lady in Waiting to Queen Alexandra. After the death of her husband she fearlessly defended his memory while continuing his charitable work for the benefit of veterans. writing a memoir about their rel...ationship, "The Man I Knew." Lady Haig teamed up with American Moina Belle Michael and French Anna Guérin, in an effort to promote the "Flanders rRd Poppy" as the symbol of the sacrifices of military veterans - the poppy being Inspired by the now famous poem, In Flanders Field, Lady Haig was so inspired by the Poppy that she became aprime mover in a movement to use red paper poppies as a token of grief over the overwhelming numbers of casualties from WWI., Lady Haig in March 1926 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom established the Lady Haig Poppy Factory with just two workers, two wounded soldiers, a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, and soon after her staff numbered twenty eight workers, with a waiting list of wounded veterans seeking employment to make poppies honoring their fallen hero comrades. To qualify to work at the Lady Haig's Poppy Factory each veteran must be in receipt of a war pension. When demand grew, the factory moved from Edinburgh’s Canongate to bigger premises in the Warriston district of Edinburgh. Today, the factory still bears Lady Haig’s name, and in 2017 the first female poppy maker was hired, honoring women veterans. Lady Haig continued to be involved with the Poppy Factory in her later years, selling the factory’s products behind the Factory shop counter. Countess Haig passed away in Bangor, North Wales in 1939 and is buried in Scotland. The National Portrait Gallery has 14 portraits of her. Her legacy lives in in the countless paper poppy wreaths and pins which honor war dead around the world, particularly on November 11, - known as Remembrance Day in Britain and the Commonwealth and Veterans Day in the United States. Sports Feature by Cameron Steer: Famous Scots in Sport - The Shot Heard Around the World When discussing the greatest moments in the history of America’s beloved sport Baseball, some popular American sporting icons may come up, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson or Joe Dimaggio for instance. What you may not expect to hear about is a gentleman from Glasgow who sent the baseball world into a frenzy at the time for his three run home run which won the pennant for the giant...s in 1951. The shot that resulted in this historical play was dubbed the shot heard around the world. The Scottish born baseball star responsible for this historical moment was Bobby Thomson. Bobby was born in Townhead, in Glasgow and had six siblings who all emigrated to America with him when he was two years old, in 1925. Bobby grew up on Staten Island next to New York City and as soon as he graduated highschool, he signed a professional baseball contract for the NY Giants in 1942 but almost immediately took a hiatus for military service before being discharged in 1945, thereby returning to play semi-pro baseball. Bobby had an incredibly successful career here in America, with eight 20 home run seasons and even three all star team selections. However it was his shot heard around the world which overshadowed these fantastic achievements and immortalized the Scot in baseball folklore.
