Photo: Erin Townsend Photography My baby turns 1 today! I’m here to proclaim to the world that I have NOT lost all the baby weight yet. Let’s normalize the fact that pregnancy changes your body!... I’m sure every mom has heard it took you 9 months to put it on, it’s going to take 9 months to lose it or give yourself until the baby is 1. These are actually not very gracious time frames and may not be realistic. EVERY BODY IS DIFFERENT! Yes, I’m a dietitian and I have the tools in my toolbelt to be able to lose weight. However, I also have the knowledge that slow and steady wins the race and that nourishing and being kind to my body was more important. New mom life is HARD! Add a pandemic, sleep deprivation, running a business, moving said business and trying to figure out a new work/life/sleep/exercise/marriage balance is a lot. I didn’t want to add strict exercise goals and tracking my eating on top of that. In that last year, I ate healthful foods, ate junk foods, exercised, rested, ate mindfully, ate mindlessly and most importantly enjoyed my baby. I unfortunately was not able to find good evidence to support this, but it seems that everyone’s weight loss journey with breastfeeding is different as well. Breastfeeding helps some women lose weight, while all those hormones may actually make weight loss challenging for others. Personally, I’ve seen a lot more weight loss more recently as my little one is eating more food and is breastfeeding less. Breastfeeding has amazing health benefits for both me and my little guy, so we’re going to do it as long as we can beyond a year. Weight isn’t the only determinant of health! After struggling with infertility, I’m just so happy to have had the ability to get pregnant and carry a child. I am honored to be able to have a postpartum body and in the grand scheme of things, what is looks like is a low priority. #postpartumbody #postpartumweightloss #fourthtrimester #breastfeeding #dietitiansofinstagram #infertilitywarrior
