#GreatHunger An Gorta Mor -Commeoration 2020 This year I felt more attention went towards it, & I think that may be because of COVID-19. People can relate more. Often people look at the famine as something abstract that happened in 1845- that doesn’t have any impact on their day-to-day basis.... Ireland has never recovered from the famine period of 1845 - 1850. This was mainly due to not having any form of caring leadership at the time perhaps since. comment: As a people we were just let starve or emigrate, a population reduced from 7 million to 3 million, some would even call it a genocide on our people with our food production being exported while our people starved. Thankfully with the Covid 19 virus, we have had good, compassionate and caring leadership, giving good example to many of our neighbouring countries, we are now saving lives with our restrictions and joint actions together as a people. Background: Josepha Madigan the Fine Gael TD for Dublin Rathdown and Minister for Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht. She is an award-winning family lawyer, author & mediator, passionate about serving her local community as their representative in Dáil Éireann

Remembering the GREAT HUNGER - Seeing people dying of Typhoid Fever on Outlander is very touching. Typhus is the disease which follows famine. During the Irish Holocaust (An Gorta Mór) famine killed 1 million people. Typhoid Fever killed 1 1/2 million more and many of them were our ancestors. When the fever came, families would shut the door and die together in privacy, men, women, elders, and babies. Weeks later entire villages were found with not a living soul. Every house was full of the dead.
