If you’re planning to take your pet to the beach, it’s important to know that salt water consumption is toxic and highly dangerous. Pets will likely drink salt water when fresh water isn’t available. So keep a portable bowl nearby and offer them water every 20 minutes to help them stay hydrated. If you discover your pet consumed salt water, seek veterinary care immediately.

Marley is helping us to remind everyone that Fourth of July celebrations are right around the corner. To make sure your day is filled with fun, we wanted to share a few quick safety tips to keep in mind. Avoid too much heat exposure, and make sure your pets are wearing their tags at all times. If your pet is sensitive to fireworks and loud noises, have a crate or safe enclosed space for them to stay. Continue to monitor them so they can feel comfortable. Now that we’ve covered that, we’d love to know how you’re celebrating. Share a picture of your 4th of July spirit!

Would you be prepared if you had to evacuate during a disaster? It’s important to have a pet preparedness plan and emergency kit in place. Make a Pet Evacuation Plan to know where to go in an emergency: vet’s office, local animal shelters, pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, or trusted relative and friend’s houses. Pet Emergency Kit Checklist: bottled water, pet food, blankets, leash, collar, harness, pet life jacket, flashlight, basic pet first aid kit, your pet’s medical records, vet’s contact info, medications, photos of your pet. Make sure to keep your pet information current and supplies stocked!

During the winter months, cats will often seek out any warm space they can find. Unfortunately, common cozy places include underneath a car and a warm car engine which pose obvious danger. Here’s a few actions you can take to avoid these types of catastrophes: Keep your cat safe and warm inside Check on your cat before taking any trips Give any cats that might be hiding in your car a warning by pounding your hood or loudly closing the door before you start your car Give cats time to escape your car after you’ve made the loud noises

Meet India Tuthill, she's been an outstanding LVT, and has helped almost every department at ASC! We wanted to take the opportunity to highlight India for National Blood Doner Month. Did you know, pets occasionally need blood for surgeries and transfusions? Each donation can help save two to four dogs or cats in need. Requirements for dogs to donate: Must be 1-9 years Weigh 35-50 pounds, but not overweight Calm, friendly and obedient In good health and current o...n vaccinations Has never received a blood transfusion Requirements for cats to donate: Must be 1-9 years Weight 9 pounds or more In good health and current on vaccinations Pass comprehensive blood screening Has never received a blood transfusion. India is a big advocate for donating blood - she typically contributes twice a year and sometimes recruits others to join. Pictures on the right include Amanda, another long-time Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) at ASC. Please help us give a big thank you to India! #BloodDoner #animalblooddonor #animalblooddonation #LVT #bestinthebusiness #AnimalHealth #askASC

A hematoma (a blood blister) commonly occurs in dog’s ear flaps. This happens when a blood vessel in the ear bursts and bleeds into the space between the ear cartilage and skin. It can be caused by scratching, shaking of the ears or bite wounds. Dogs with long floppy ears are at greater risk. A hematoma must be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine the best medical treatment. It’s important to identify the underlying cause, which in many cases may be an infection or allergy. #askASC

No one wants to encounter a choking pet, but it’s important to respond quickly. If your pet is conscious, do a modified Heimlich maneuver. Place the pet on its side, applying pressure right behind the ribs and pressing your hands forward. If your pet is unconscious, open its mouth and try to clear the object out with your fingers. This may help push the item out. Get someone else to drive to the animal hospital immediately, so you can continue to do this on the way.
