Hi everyone, I AM offering telehealth sessions by video while we continue safety precautions. I’ll admit I was a skeptic about telehealth in the beginning but it’s turning out to be easy for most people to access and more comfortable for counseling than I expected. Call or text if you’d like to know more. (Here’s a bonus picture of a waterfall I visited this past weekend )
This clip has been helpful as a point of discussion in session with clients in both individual counseling and couples work. It’s inspired a lot of thoughtful response-plus it’s cute

When you are feeling bad, it can be really hard to believe breathe work will help. It might even seem impossible. I hear I’ve tried that. It doesn’t work for me so often. It helps if you can build familiarity with these practices when you aren’t in a crisis moment. It helps build muscle memory, it helps build a history of positive effect, and it makes these resources feel like more of a viable option later when stress levels do rise. Don’t they say it takes 21 days to build a new habit? It’s well worth the investment, I promise!
Cognitive behavioral therapy is now considered the best treatment for insomnia, especially for older adults. It teaches people to challenge disruptive negative thinking and replace it with positive thoughts that counter arousal and induce relaxation. Before going to bed, try using soothing imagery or meditation to reduce cognitive arousal. The American College of Physicians recommends cognitive behavioral therapy as the first-line treatment for adults with chronic insomnia. It is much safer than drugs and, unlike sleeping pills that work only when taken and shouldn’t be used long-term, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, or CBT-I, teaches effective strategies that continue to work long after the therapy ends.
How can paced breathing shut down hyperarousal? Dr. Marsha Linehan, creator of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, explains.
