We're living through times that have been indelibly marked by darkness and hate, so it's more important than ever that we remember the words of Dr. King, who taught us that only light can drive out darkness, and only love can drive out hate. On this day when we reflect on Dr. King's greatness and the values he preached, let's all recommit ourselves to being a source of light and love in this world against the dark forces that seek to divide us and do us harm.

My statement on the NRA leaving New York State for Texas:

Senator Anna M. Kaplan 03.11.2020

BREAKING: The State has updated the out of state travel quarantine guidelines, eliminating the previous state-by-state quarantine list based on local transmission rates. Going forward, all travelers must be tested for COVID-19 within three days of leaving for New York. Upon arrival, they must quarantine for three days, and then take another test on the fourth day. If the test is negative, the person is no longer required to quarantine. People who choose not to get tested must remain in quarantine for a 14 day period. New Yorkers who leave the state for less than 24 hours must also get tested within 4 days.

New York State is continuing to see hotspots of coronavirus transmission in areas around the state, including Long Island, and the situation demands that we all continue to do the things that helped us to stop the spread in our community, like wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. In addition, we now have a new tool that assists with contact tracing, and empowers you with information if you've potentially been exposed to someone who tested positive. I'm urging all Long Islanders to download the COVID Alert NY app today to help contain hot spots and keep our community safe from further spread of Covid19.

Today is Scott Beigel's 38th Birthday, but like too many families shattered by gun violence in this country, Scott's parents don't get to celebrate with their beloved son today. We owe it to Scott, Scott's parents, and every other American who has lost a loved one to this epidemic to do more, to take action, and stop these senseless tragedies by taking common-sense action.

Nothing is more important than the safety of our community’s children, so I’m partnering with The American Red Cross to host a free virtual emergency preparedness class called The Pillowcase Project for parents and children aged 7-12. The program, which gets its name from the evacuation of Hurricane Katrina in which many people evacuated with their personal belongings inside their pillowcases, is aimed at educating children on specific disasters and empowering them to feel... emotionally and physically prepared to deal with emergencies. It reinforces personal preparedness by engaging children in a discussion about emergencies, teaching coping skills, and practicing preparedness at school and home. The event will be held on my Facebook Live on Wednesday, October 21, at 3:00pm with experts from the Red Cross presenting and engaging in an interactive Q&A with parents and children. Anyone can view the program at facebook.com/annamkaplan/live without pre-registering, and no facebook account is required to watch. If you have any questions or if I can be of any assistance at all, please don't hesitate to contact my office at [email protected] or 516-746-5924.
