THROWBACK TELECOM THURSDAY The former WMAL’s four 400’ towers were demolished yesterday to make way for a new residential housing development. In 2018, the historic station’s transmitter site was changed to co-locate with WWRC’s in Germantown, MD. WMAL calls are now WSBN. Radio, politics, and elections, were intertwined from the beginnings of the medium. In 1916, Lee de Forest broadcast the first presidential election returns ov...er his Highbridge station 2XG in New York, erroneously reporting that Charles Evans Hughes had defeated Woodrow Wilson. However, KDKA's reporting of the Harding-Cox election returns exactly 100 years tonight ago were considerably more accurate. The nation's presidents utilized radio to speak directly to the nation, beginning with Warren G. Harding in 1922. In 1924, candidate Robert La Follette was the first presidential candidate to speak directly to the public, noting that "radio will undoubtedly serve to minimize misrepresentation in the news columns of the press." Al Smith gave the first radio concession speech in 1928, after losing to Herbert Hoover. Both Presidents Coolidge and Hoover gave regular nationwide addresses over the radio during their terms of office, but it was Franklin Roosevelt who took advantage of radio's intimacy by abandoning the format of the formal political speech, and instead speaking informally to the nation through his many "Fireside Chats". Each succeeding election saw the big radio networks make an ever greater production out of broadcasting the presidential election returns, taking advantage of radio's immediacy to undermine the print media's capabilities. The newspapers tried to fight back by projecting the results ever farther in advance of their deadlines, resulting in the Chicago Tribune's embarrassing headline gaffe in the 1948 election. From that moment on, broadcasting's dominance of election night reporting was a fait accompli. See more
