In honor of Black History Month we will be posting black history facts periodically to this page. This month we start with Claudette Colvin, one of the first women, before Rosa Parks, to refuse to give up her seat to a white person. In the book Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice, Claudette talks about the events leading up to the incident. Born in 1939, Claudette & her family which included her parents & 3 sisters, moved to Alabama when she was 8. At the age of 13, one ...of her sisters was diagnosed with Polio & died shortly after. In 1954, Claudette witnessed an incident involving one of her black classmates by the name of Jeremiah Reeves, 15, who was convicted of raping 7 white women. Many in the community believed that the police forced Jeremiah to plea guilty to the allegations. After a deliberation by an all white jury he was sentenced to the electric chair. This infuriated Claudette & ignited her interest in Civil Rights. In March 1955, now 15 herself, Claudette & her friends got on an empty bus to head to school, sitting in seats across from each that were halfway towards the back of the bus. As the bus continued its route, it became full with white people coming from or going to work. Eventually a white woman boards the bus & stands in front of Claudette & her friends. The driver asks them to move to which her friends do but Claudette refuses. The driver pulls over & asks the police to arrest her. Claudette reports that they dragged her off the bus, kicked her & made lewd comments about her body. Claudette was charged with violating segregation laws, disturbing the peace & assaulting a cop. The judge threw away the assault charge. In December 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman and the rest as you know is history.
