Dr. Bukky Kolawole joins us to share her perspective on racial injustice and the need to look within to help bring more humanity to others

Union Square Practice 13.10.2020

At Union Square Practice, we stand in support of those facing systemic injustice as well as those who have joined them in protest. We, too, are profoundly shaken by the violence perpetrated against our fellow citizens because of the color of their skin. Since January 1st 2015, 1,252 black people have been shot and killed by police--a rate more than twice that of white people. We believe that we all must take part in the dialogue about the "what" and "how" of change, so we would like to help create an environment to discuss the difficult and emotionally charged topic of race in America today. Please join us on tomorrow, June 9th, from 11am to 12pm for an online discussion with Dr. Bukky Kolawole on Talking about Race: Being an Ally In This Time of Racial Injustice.

Union Square Practice 05.07.2020

We know that doctors and doctors-in-training on the front lines of this worldwide battle against COVID-19 are facing stress and potential trauma that is unprecedented, and for which many feel unprepared. Taking care of very sick patients, coupled with the fear of becoming infected with a life-threatening virus (and possibly infecting loved ones), plus the loss of usual routines/expectations of life, leaves even the sturdiest among us feeling unsettled. Emerging healthy and s...trong requires skills that can be learned. Science has taught us that how people handle stress in these difficult moments (i.e., creating healthy habits of thinking and acting vs. succumbing to negative response patterns) greatly affects future well-being. Like building a muscle, developing resilience takes intentionality and practice. We at Union Square Practice are sharing our resources and expertise in a way that is practical and relevant to help support our amazing physicians during this time. We have put together a curriculum using the evidence-based strategies of Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy to offer our participants a brief and effective training program in coping with extreme stress and building the skills for lifelong resilience. The group will be mostly didactic (like a graduate seminar) and will include elements of experiential learning (i.e., practicing the skills in real time), as well as group support via sharing of experience. Confidentially rules will be strictly enforced to protect participants’ privacy, foster trust, and ensure the safety of the space. We will meet once per week for 4 weeks via a HIPAA- compliant videoconference platform. Groups will be held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm ET beginning May 12. THERE IS NO COST. THIS IS A LIVE/INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE. THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH STUDY. We have space for approx. 10 participants and admission will be on a first come, first served basis. The group will be provided by two very experienced clinical psychologists, Drs. Nicole Cooper and Julia Vigna Bosson of Union Square Practice, both of whom specialize in trauma and cognitive behavioral therapy. Additionally, Dr. Cooper practices DBT, and Dr. Bosson has extensive experience integrating mindfulness-based practices into psychotherapy. Please email Dr. Nicole Cooper at [email protected] if you are interested in participating - please include your first and last name and your phone number. All inquiries will be handled confidentially.

Learn valuable strategies for improving your sleep in quarantine and beyond

Union Square Practice 08.06.2020

Empathy is not the same as Sympathy. Having the latter lets you identify with the person's situation, whereas having empathy involves identifying with the person's thoughts and feelings...even experiencing those feelings in some capacity yourself.

Union Square Practice 01.06.2020

Let’s make sure that your bed stays for sleeping and not just for working...and other things. Read the words written below for some info on our two wonderful speakers. Happy to see you next week! REGISTER here: https://www.unionsquarepractice.com/news-informat/webinars/

Union Square Practice 29.05.2020

Research has shown that empathy is not simply inborn, but can actually be taught. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, including: 1) Radical listening, 2) Being more mindful of everything & everyone around you, 3) Being more curious about strangers, & therapy always helps!

Union Square Practice 10.05.2020

There is a neurobiological basis of empathy. Each of us has "mirror neurons" in our prefrontal cortex that activate when we observe and experience emotion in another. In the years since their discovery, mirror neurons have been shown to not only explain empathy, but also autism.

Union Square Practice 05.05.2020

There are two types of Empathy. The first is Emotional Empathy - our automatic drive to respond to another person's emotions. The second is Cognitive Empathy - our ability to recognize accurately and understand another's emotional state.

Union Square Practice 27.03.2020

Even one of the greatest writers and poets of our time struggled with the Imposter Syndrome.

Union Square Practice 22.03.2020

Imposter Syndrome - originally thought to only affect women - impacts people equally regardless of gender. It has also been found to disproportionately affect ethnic minorities, correlate strongly with feelings of depression & anxiety, and typically does not get better with age.

Union Square Practice 05.03.2020

Imposter syndrome can be overcome by opposite action - a technique of behaving opposite to the way you feel. Also, don't watch only what you eat, but watch what you think. And develop work relationships through which you can get honest feedback.

Union Square Practice 19.02.2020

Clinical psychologist Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes coined the term "Impostor Phenomenon" in a 1978 paper in Psychotherapy Theory, Research and Practice.

Union Square Practice 01.02.2020

There are two kinds of people: those who doubt their own abilities and those who lie about it. Most people, especially those in a new situation, fear the worst - that they lack the necessary talent to perform or to fit in. This is commonly called the Imposter Syndrome.

Myth: Having Self-Compassion is just a fancy way of having self-pity or thinking you're more important than you are. Fact: Self-Compassion gives you new perspective, helps you validate your worth, and provides a safe space for honest internal conversations. #SelfCompassion

Union Square Practice 23.12.2019

Self-Compassion has been shown to protect against feelings of anxiety and to improve one's overall psychological wellbeing (Neff, Kirkpatrick, & Rude, 2007). There have also been links to improved interpersonal relationships, motivation, body image, and physiological health.

Union Square Practice 20.12.2019

1. Self-care - get sleep, eat well, exercise 2. Listen to your thoughts, observe your behavior free of judgment 3. Don't isolate, talk to someone 4. Take a step back from whatever you're about to judge yourself on and think, "What would a really good friend say to me right now?"

Union Square Practice 06.12.2019

Dr. Kristin Neff is recognized as the world leader on self-compassion and the first to operationalize and define the concept more than a decade ago. Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff, Ph.D.

Union Square Practice 28.11.2019

Self-compassion is the act of engaging in self-kindness, recognizing and accepting that everyone has flaws and makes mistakes, and learning to be mindful of your thoughts and actions without judgment.

Myth: I already talk to my friends and family about my problems. Therapy won't add anything to my life. Fact: Therapy provides a special opportunity to work through difficulties in your life with a trained, objective professional in a safe, non-judgmental space.

Union Square Practice 04.10.2019

The doomed pursuit of perfection can have a significant impact on your mental health. The desire to be perfect correlates strongly with higher levels of depression and anxiety (Curran & Hill, 2017). Put your quest for good mental health ahead of your pursuit for perfection.

Union Square Practice 30.09.2019

1. Reevaluate your standards - get accurate info to counter your unrealistic beliefs & expectations. 2. Use hypothesis testing - small experiments to try to disprove your perfectionistic beliefs. 3. Challenge your perfectionistic thoughts - e.g., Does this really matter?
