It is with great sadness the Liberty ARC family says goodbye to Pamela "Pam" Debellotte. Pam will be remembered for her positive outlook on life and the smile that she wore every day. She loved wearing her jewelry and dancing to music whenever she heard it. Pam loved making different crafts, necklaces and cards for her sister and friends. Pam had a very close relationship with her case manager, Robyn, and often called her Robbie when they face-timed each other. Pam had a smile that could make the darkest days brighter and no matter how the day was going Pam was sure to make you smile. Pam's life was full and happy and she changed the lives of everyone she met. We will truly miss her.

Elaine Nalli, a senior hab coordinator at Liberty ARC, recently received the COVID-19 vaccination. She said she’s kept herself informed on the virus since March, and she believes the vaccination is going to play a crucial role in managing it and that’s why she received it. Our body has never been exposed to this virus so naturally the first vaccine might be intimidating to some people, Elaine said I was not worried at all and figured that any side effects would be man...ageable and much better than taking a chance at how my body would have reacted to COVID-19, should I have caught it. I would do it again too! Elaine said the first shot of the vaccination was a piece of cake, other than a bit of soreness and some itching in the injection area. The second shot was more intense, and left her with a headache, body aches and exhaustion, however, by the second day after the shot she was fine. Elaine said she got the vaccination to help protect those she loves and cares for. What’s my biggest fear? she asked. To be a carrier and unknowingly give COVID to someone else that’s the number one reason I got this vaccine. My parents and my in-laws both live within a mile from me and my husband, and I have not visited them in weeks. I visited them before the holidays and wore a mask the whole time; I would just like to hug my parents again! Elaine said she feels lucky to receive the vaccination and she wants to help the world return to some normalcy. I am such a lucky person I love my job and I love all of the people I work with and support, she said. I work with people who make a difference by assisting others and going out into the community every day to deliver meals on wheels, clean churches and help maintain animal shelters, just to name a few. These same people have barely left their home since last March. Not for any other reason but for the fact that they have immune systems that are weaker than the average person. I want to see them lead a fulfilling life again. Heck, I want to see that for all of us! Thank you for your commitment to keeping those we support safe, Elaine! #strongertogether #covidvacccine

Joe Lynch is the biggest Buffalo Bills fan around. He’s been a Bills fan for years and he proudly wears his Bills gear every day. The 2020 Bills season was even more special for Joe because the Bills won the AFC East division title for the first time since 1995 and made it to the playoffs again for the third time in four years after previously going 17 consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance. Joe wanted to commemorate the success of his favorite team by purchasing a ...Bills jacket to wear for the playoffs, however, the shipment on the jacket was delayed and he wasn’t going to receive it in time. So, Amy Sanchez, Liberty ARC’s Purchasing Agent, took it upon herself to pick up some Bills memorabilia while driving out to Buffalo to bring her daughter back to college. Joe was so excited for Amy to bring him some new gear that he almost teared up when he got the news, and Amy was very happy to help put a smile on Joe’s face. Joe said he plans to wear his Bills gear this Sunday for Super Bowl LV, even though Buffalo won’t be playing. I wear my Bills gear all year round, so I’ll be wearing it Sunday too, he said. I was so excited when Amy brought me my Bills shirts. When asked if the Bills will make it to the Super Bowl next year, Joe said he thinks the chances are really good. I don’t want to talk about next year yet, he said. I really thought we had it this year, but I hope we get there next year I think we will though, I really do. #iamliberty #libertyarc #strongertogether #montgomerycountyny #buffalobills

In this position, Karl will be a part of Liberty ARC’s senior leadership team where he will assist in the development of the organization’s long-term goals, strategies, plans and policies. Karl comes to Liberty ARC wi...th more than two decades of experience in executive management, strategic planning, finance and fundraising. He joins the organization from St. Peter’s Health Partners, where he served as the Executive Director and the Chief Development Officer for more than 17 years. During his time at St. Peter’s, Coté led fund raising of more than $66 million in charitable contributions, he spearheaded the development of strategic planning that more than doubled annual campaign revenue and he initiated the first ever Comprehensive Capital Campaign which exceeded the goal of raising $20 million two years earlier than planned. And I’m really looking forward to serving our mission. I am thrilled to have Karl join the Liberty ARC team, said Jennifer Saunders, CEO of Liberty ARC. Karl’s strong executive experience in finance, team building, and strategic planning will be a great asset to our organization, and his commitment to the mission of Liberty will continue the business office’s guiding principle of putting the people we serve at the center of all we do. Karl will be filling the position of CFO Barbara Ganey, who is retiring from the agency after 6 years. Ganey will be staying on for a two month transition period to work with Karl. I’m so honored and impressed by the great work done by Barbara over her years here at Liberty ARC, Saunders said. Her commitment to helping people with disabilities and expertise in all financial matters played a substantial role in the success of our agency. We will miss her dearly, but I know Liberty ARC will continue to build upon the achievements we have seen during her time here. After a 45-year career in financial management for not-for-profit organizations both in New York and Massachusetts, the last six of which were with Liberty, I’m happy to pass the baton to Karl Coté, Barbara said. I’m setting my sights now on enjoying my three grandchildren and resuming my music activities locally and in New York City post pandemic, of course.

On Monday, Jeremy Purtell, a psychology assistant at Liberty ARC, received the first shot of the COVID-19 vaccination. I got the vaccine because the work we do is too important to not be at our best, physically and mentally, Jeremy said. I feel that the vaccine can provide staff, individuals, and individuals’ families some comfort, but more importantly, it can provide consistency in our staffing and supports. Even in a non-pandemic year it is never great to have inconsiste...ncy in staffing due to people being out sick and being tested for illness. I feel that getting the vaccine is helping our agency stay in front of this horrible pandemic. Jeremy also thinks the vaccination will provide the security to safely administer in-person supports. I feel that the goals Liberty represents for our individuals will be easier to implement with the development of the vaccine, he said. I like to do my job in person within reason and I want to be able to be there for the individuals we support in any capacity that they may need. Jeremy’s decision to get the vaccination was also very personal; his grandfather passed away from COVID-19 three weeks ago and two family members have tested positive for the virus. The shot was not scary at all, and it didn’t hurt at all, he said. The clinic itself was friendly, clean, comforting and professional. I feel that it was very appropriate for staff in our field to be included in the first rounds of vaccinations because so many of our individuals cannot protect themselves, and we need to help protect them. #iamliberty #libertyarc #strongertogether #montgomerycountyny #covidvaccine

As part of National Corporate Compliance & Ethics Week, Liberty ARC would like to recognize Jessica Murray today! Jessica is the agency's Corporate Compliance Auditor. She joined Liberty ARC's Corporate Compliance & Quality Assurance (CC&QA) team exactly two years ago today, on November 5, 2018! Jessica says she enjoys all aspects of her job, but her favorite aspect is reviewing and comparing Liberty ARC's reports to see how much the agency has improved since its previous au...dit. "I love reading my final reports because after calculating the data I love reading our compliance and quality percentages they are usually very high," she said. "Although our agency has a high expected standard for these percentages (in both site visit and department/process audits) the quality of work produced by our agency’s staff consistently rises above that high standard." Jessica says she feels privileged to work with staff who provide the utmost support to those who receive services from the agency. "I feel honored to work with others who take such pride in all that we do here for the individuals in our community and it is comforting to know we provide high-quality services that improve so many lives," she said. Jessica says she's proud to work for the CC&QA department at Liberty ARC and enjoys offering support to all of the other departments within the agency. "A large portion of what my department does is support each of the other departments and programs, helping them ensure that we operate within state regulations and guidelines, as well as improve the quality of our services, which is vital to the health and safety of the individuals as well as to the growth of our agency," she said. Thank you for everything you do, Jessica! And Happy #NationalCorporateComplianceandEthicsWeek!

Last Wednesday, Liberty ARC was included in the first round of COVID-19 vaccinations, and David Nicholas, an LPN at the agency, received his first shot of the COVID-19 vaccination. David said the decision to get the vaccination was very easy for him. For me it wasn’t as much for MY health but the health of my mom, my family, and for the people that I support on a daily basis, he said. It has been a terrible year for so many people and seeing how many lives that have been c...hanged because of this terrible disease in so many ways is just enough. Too many people I know have died or suffered for weeks in the hospital and some are still having issues. There are so many deniers, so many selfish people complaining about masks, and so on, and I feel that we need to trust and believe in the specialists and scientists out there making a real difference. David said he doesn’t want to put anyone at risk of getting the coronavirus, and he’ll do everything he can to keep those around him safe. Personally, I don’t want to worry that I am risking bringing something home to my family and my loved ones, he said. I also don’t want to risk the lives of the individuals that we care for who are already fragile enough. Lives can be changed and affected by the smallest of things and with people whose health is not always the best, adding this virus into the mix can be a recipe for disaster. David said he did his research on the vaccine and he trusts the process. As far as the vaccine and its safety all things in life come with some level of risk, he said. But looking back through history, most vaccines have been pretty safe and successful and I did quite a bit of research from enough articles to feel I made an informed and safe decision. Five days after receiving the first shot, David updated us on how we was feeling. I feel great and had no issues or any of the side effects that some people have mentioned, he said. I felt good on the day I received it and every day since. Hopefully it helps protect my family, friends, and the fragile individuals that I am in contact with. #libertyarc #iamliberty #strongertogether #montgomerycountyny #covidvacccine

"Initially, we felt we should look at agencies closer to our home in Albany County," Richard Vanderbilt said. "Once we found out how great the agency was, however, we knew the boys belonged at Liberty ARC, and we decided it was worth making the hour-long trip for visits." November is National Gratitude Month -- a month to show appreciation and give thanks to everyone who has a positive impact on your life. This year, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Liberty ARC i...s particularly thankful for everyone who has contributed to the agency -- the communities we belong to, our generous donors, and ALL of the wonderful staff & individuals who inspire us every day! This snowy winter day is the perfect time to play a few rounds of giant Jenga inside with friends! This giant Jenga set was awarded to the Helping Hands Day Program at Liberty ARC as part of Liberty Foundation’s Ground Level Grants program. This was the second year Liberty Foundation sponsored Ground Level Grants, a competitive grant program exclusively benefiting Liberty ARC programs that enhance the agency’s mission together we support people with disabilities to ac...hieve a quality of life each person values. Jenga is a fun, competitive game of coordination where players take turns removing one block at a time from a tower constructed of blocks. Each block removed is then placed on top of the tower, creating an increasingly taller and more unstable structure. Whoever knocks the tower over loses the game. Jenga is a great game for building decision-making skills, improving hand-eye coordination, and stressing the importance of patience. Jochuamh and Lolalynn went head to head in this nail biter of a round. The tower grew increasingly unsteady and Jochuamh was declared the winner after Lolalynn knocked it down...however, they decided a rematch was necessary! #iamliberty #libertyarc #strongertogether #montgomerycountyny #groundlevelgrants

It is with great sadness that the Liberty ARC family says goodbye to Yvette Jevitt. Yvette passed away last Tuesday with her residential manager, Nancy, by her side playing her favorite songs, I will always love you by Whitney Houston and You’ve got a friend by James Taylor. Yvette touched the lives of everyone who knew her, and it’s extremely difficult to put into words what an amazing woman she was. Yvette will always be remembered as a dedicated worker; over the years she worked at Amsterdam Printing and Litho Co. and Liberty Enterprises. She enjoyed competing in the Special Olympics and had accumulated many medals during her lifetime. She was also involved in the Community Garden at FMCC and liked planting and harvesting vegetables. Yvette had a happy life, filled with friends and family who loved her dearly. She changed the lives of everyone she met & we will truly miss her. For those of you who may have not known Yvette, you will have a lasting impression from the videos and photos below. As part of National Corporate Compliance & Ethics Week, Liberty ARC would like to recognize Karen Blake! Karen is the agency's Corporate Compliance Audit Coordinator. She's worked at Liberty ARC for the past 17 years and has been in the Corporate Compliance & Quality Assurance (CC&QA) Department for the last six years. Karen really enjoys her job and she brings a lot to the table with her years of experience at the agency. She also feels as though she finally found a role sh...e truly belongs in. "I have held various positions over the years, which has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge to share," she said. "I am also a very detail-orientated person, which is a bonus for the position I am in; I feel that I have finally found my niche." Karen also likes that she's been able to witness improvements made at Liberty ARC over the last few years, and she has a sense of pride looking back at the progress that's been made. "I have been able to work on some of the same types of auditing during the past 6 years," she said. "Although some audit results may not have appeared to be so favorable at the time of completion, over the years, I have personally witnessed significant overall improvements with meeting regulatory standards, improved policy and procedures as well as overall enhanced quality. I like to believe that I had some part of this." In Karen's role, she likes that she's continuously learning something new and there's never a dull moment. "Along with the ever-changing regulations and guidance that the agency needs to keep up with, I have been able to utilize various programs and some technology to make my job easier, and I am not what you would call a tech person," she said. "Although audits that are completed may be the same as far as structure and components go, they are never really the same, and there are always opportunities for improvements, both for myself and for the services audited. Karen thinks the CC&QA Department is a valuable asset to Liberty ARC because of all the support it offers to everyone at the agency. "We are a support department at Liberty ARC, and we do just that, she said. "We support and work with the entire agency to ensure compliance with all regulations, standards, guidance and policy and procedures are implemented. This results in individuals being supported and receiving the quality of care that Liberty ARC is known for." Thank you for everything you do, Karen! And Happy #NationalCorporateComplianceandEthicsWeek!

This week we're celebrating National Corporate Compliance & Ethics Week to share the importance of compliance and ethics in the workplace. Throughout the week we'll also be introducing all of the team members of our Corporate Compliance & Quality Assurance (CC&QA) department here at Liberty ARC. Today, we'd like to introduce Incident Review Manager Wendy Moore! ... Wendy has been at the agency for the past 25 years and she's been working in CC&QA for the last three and a half years. "My favorite aspect of my position is being able to use my years of experience and knowledge of agency policy and procedure to be a resource to staff, the department and the agency at-large," Wendy said. "I take a lot of pride in being able to support the individuals by ensuring impartial and thorough investigations into allegations of abuse, neglect and mistreatment. I recently became the chairperson for the agency’s abuse and neglect prevention committee." When asked why she thinks the CC&QA department at Liberty ARC is important, Wendy said her department oversees all other departments at the agency in regards to proper regulations and procedures and it's important that employees understand and follow agency and state policies. "I personally feel the CC&QA department is important to the agency because our oversight encompasses all regulations, policies and procedures," she said. "We have many years of combined experience as a department and are a great resource to staff. Our doors are always open to assist individuals and staff. Whether it is department audits, on-site quality visits or investigations, we ensure everyone is supported through the process. We value feedback and are constantly taking that feedback and evolving, changing our approach to meet everyone’s needs." Similar to all of Liberty ARC's departments, CC&QA had to adjust to a few changes throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. From March until September, all department staff uprooted their offices to their homes, where they continued to maintain regulatory requirements and agency commitments virtually. On-site quality review visits were initially put on hold and were limited to desk/paperwork reviews only; site visits recently started back up and staff must wear full PPE when entering a home. Investigation interviews have been done via Zoom or via telephone as opposed to in-person. Despite these changes, Wendy said the CC&QA department maintained daily communication with Zoom meetings and kept a positive outlook on the situation "In these challenging times, new policies and processes are being rolled out frequently to align with new, ever-changing COVID regulations," she said. "We continue to be there as a support, ready to help and answer any questions people have." Thank you for everything you do, Wendy! And Happy #NationalCorporateComplianceandEthicsWeek!

It is with great sadness that the Liberty ARC family says goodbye to Barbara "Barbie" Seeley. Barbie was loved by all who knew her. She liked joking around, listening to music, watching movies, spending time with her housemates and visiting her family. She resided on her family's farm until she moved to Canajoharie and joined the Liberty family. She was nonverbal for the most part, but she certainly had a way of letting others know of her wants and needs with special signs.... One of Barbie's favorite signs, for instance, was for shopping because that was one of her favorite activities. She also had her own responses to several words that staff would say to her; if they said "baby," she would hold her arms and rock like she was holding a baby, and she would also wrinkle her nose like a rabbit when staff said bunny to her. Barbie loved her family and would visit them on weekends at the farm. When her father's health started to fail, Barbie's dear brother David would bring her father to the house to visit her. She enjoyed going out to restaurants and this was something that her father would do with her when she was visiting him. When he passed away, staff carried on the tradition. Barbie was known for being the life of the party. She loved a good piece of cake and a cup of coffee, and she enjoyed giving everyone a big hug. When she attended Day Hab, she had a habit of wandering from room to room to see what everyone was up to. She was a small woman who left a huge imprint on everyone's heart and we will truly miss her, but we know her fun-loving spirit will live on in all of us! https://www.vincenteneafuneralservice.com/ob/Barbara-Seeley

Nancy Cole recently celebrated a huge milestone of reaching 35 years of employment at Liberty ARC! Over the last 35 years, Nancy has worked in many different capacities throughout the agency. She has and continues to be, very well known and respected by both co-workers and people she has supported throughout her career. Nancy is perhaps most notably admired for her ability to advocate and truly make a difference in the lives of those she supports. Over the years, Nancy has... supported people to reach their goals at home, in their day program, and most recently with employment. When Nancy applied for the position of Employment Support Specialist at Liberty ARC's Career and Employment Network (CEN) in 2019 , naturally the Employment Services team was overjoyed. The knowledge and insight of a well- seasoned employee, as seen in Nancy, has been a true asset to the department. She has been able to utilize her skills as an advocate, as well as incorporate her many valuable community connections in order to help people be successful in obtaining and maintaining competitive employment. Over time, Nancy has taken on more challenging roles allowing her to build on and expand her knowledge of employment services, and we are excited to see her grow as a professional in the field!
