Brenden had a blast on Sunday watching his favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills, win their first playoff game in 25 years. He was glued to the TV the whole game and could hardly sit down as the game came to a close. We were super excited for Brenden as he was able to witness this event!

For the third year running, our Region I START team partnered with Community Missions of Niagara Frontier, an agency supporting vulnerable people including those who are homeless or who experience mental health concerns, to gift to families in need. Five children, ranging from 5 years old to 13 years old, and their wish lists were sponsored. Items like bedding, slippers, coats, and gloves are wrapped and ready to surprise these families! Kudos to our START team!

On November 13th, FLXGives is an all-day giving event and delivers the opportunity to be part of the generous and compassionate spirit of our community. If you are thinking about where to donate this holiday season, consider supporting an agency that provides services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A wonderful story from one of our Residential Team Leadersm Brandi. "On Game Days, you may hear someone shouting, First Down! and TOUCHDOWN!! That would be Betty. Betty has many favorite things but one of the things she looks most forward to is watching football. At 1pm every Sunday, she will yell, Brandi, the game is starting! Betty is a Giants fan but when they are not playing, she roots for the Bills. Making time on Sundays to sit down and watch football with Betty ...is something I look forward to every week. Betty makes it known when she does not agree with a call or if a play should have been done differently. At the end of the games, she will recap what she thought should have happened and tell everyone in the house if the Giants or Bills won. If I am not working on game day, Betty will tell me all about the games on my next shift. I am so thankful that something as simple as watching a football game has turned into something Betty looks forward to each week. Betty cannot wait until she is able to attend a Giants game in person one day." See more

Happy Halloween from everyone at The Arc of Chemung-Schuyler!

My name is Nateah and I'm a DSP at The Arc. I come in and encourage people to live their best lives. I try my best to get everyone as involved as they can or to be involved in everyday things like setting the table, laundry, and other tasks. Some of my favorite things about working at The Arc, so far, have been learning so much about the people I support. I've built meaningful relationships with numerous people throughout The Arc as well. It helps to know that my work is appr...eciatedwhether that be my managers praising me, or someone at the house telling me the dinner I made was good. I know that what I do means a lot to the people I support and in my mind, one great day outweighs 100 not so good days. I've learned how to be more patient and understanding. I've also learned that sometimes it's best just to listen to what people have to say. My advice for someone considering work at The Arc would be to take the risk. Once you get to know the people you'll be supporting, things will come full circle. If you're looking for a job that makes you feel good about what you're doing, The Arc is definitely the place for you!

My name is Sharon and I have been a Direct Support Professional since 1997. I provide community habilitation for the individuals we support. I enjoy assisting them in recognizing and doing what they thought they might not ever accomplish, like getting their own place and managing all the house work, or learning the public transportation systems to get around town, or brushing their teeth and hair. The best thing is to assist them in accessing natural supports in the community... and see them make that connection. I enjoy putting a smile on the faces of the individuals I am supporting, hearing them laugh, and watching them each grow and achieve their goals. The friendships I have made with co-workers are some of the greatest things I’ve gained. Being on a team and helping my coworkers through a tough day or situation and having their back when they need a break, are just a few examples. I have some amazing co-workers. Advice I can offer someone looking for a job at The Arc: patience is a must, good listening skills, and willingness to learn and teach. Also, treat everyone like you would want to be treated. "My name is Tammy and I am a direct support professional. I spend my day doing activities with the people we support and helping them with everyday things. I enjoying working with people, that’s what led me to work at The Arc of Chemung-Schuyler. One of my favorite things about my job is when I arrive to work early in the morning and having the people we support say good morning, we missed you!... Knowing that the things we consider little could make some one’s days is what motivates me to get up and come to work ever morning. One of the main things I have gained by working at The Arc is patience. My advice for someone looking for a position with at The Arc is if you want to make a difference in someone’s life, by giving them the supports they need, this is a great place to be."
