Ardsley Curling Club 26.03.2021

Club Members, I am sad to announce the passing of Pete Mitchell. A long-time curler and member of our club with his wife, Olga, for 17 years. He passed away pea...cefully after several months of illness. Pete was active for many years at the club level in Plainfield and Cape Cod. Additionally, he served as President of the GNCC from 1991-1993. He was President of the organizing committee for the 2006 Men's World Curling Championships held in Lowell MA. Pete was often at forefront of new developments in the sport he loved. Some arena clubs have started to use the Kwik Kool Rocks that he took from an idea through development and testing to production. More information will be provided as soon as it's available. A HUGE thank you to Martin Sather, Tim Klein, Dave Schrull, and the rest of our our ice crew, as well as Derek Kayser and all the volunteers who scraped and painted the floor and set up the warm room to have everything ready for our long awaited reopening on Monday!

From Chair Benj Guzman: The uncertainty of Covid is still rampaging throughout our curling domain. Some clubs have decided not to open this season, some are cu...rling currently, and some are as of yet undecided. Some clubs have made the decision to not hold external events, which is not unreasonable. The GNCC board has taken the initiative to take some of the uncertainty away. GNCC events in the upcoming traditional curling season are cancelled. These events include: The 5 Year and Under events (Childs Challenge, Kayser Memorial and Dykes Memorial) The Senior Championships (Men’s, Women’s and Mixed) The Club National Playdowns (Men’s and Women’s) The Mixed National Playdowns The Junior U-18 Playdowns (Men’s and Women’s) The Mixed Doubles Championship The Gordon Emmett Men’s Championship As a first intent, these events will be hosted next season by the same clubs that committed to them this season. Clubs will not lose these events if they wish to keep themthey are just postponed for a year. The GNCC Arena Championship is not on the cancellation list, as this event usually takes place after the traditional curling season. This may be in the post vaccine era, so we will wait and see. The Junior curling camps in the summer are also in this ‘wait and see’ category. The Gordon International is not a ‘GNCC event’, and is governed by it’s own trustees, so that decision will be up them in the future. The Ross Tarlton has already been cancelled by it’s governing body. With respects to the 5 Year and Under eligibility, next year will not count for anybody (regardless of games played). Let’s treat this pandemic year as if it never happened. What pandemic? I know there are still a lot of decisions yet to made by clubs and curlers alike in these strange times. I hope this makes things a little easier for everyone. Stay safe until we are covid free!

This weekend we saw some of the last great curling of this season due to suspended sports across the world in response to COVID-19. @ardsleycurlingclub is proud of Team O’Reilly (Nathan O’Reilly, Scott, Mike Horowitz, and Stefan Benkowski) for representing and winning the B event at the Francis Dykes Memorial Men’s 5-and-under Bonspiel in Charlotte, NC! Thanks Charlotte Curling for hosting and taking care of our boys. Good curling, all! Stay healthy and well. #curling #icecurling #growthegame #curlingrocks #hurryhard #learntocurl #dykes #bonspiel
