Armitage Gone! Dance 01.11.2020

Written in the Osage language: stop. It applies to so much of our history. I hope this time of reckoning is going to lead to the higher consciousness that allows for real change.

I’ve been in hibernation not knowing how to think about time. But I seem to be waking up. Jasper Johns has meant a lot to me throughout my artistic life. Sending him happy birthday greetings.

Four shots of the San Antonio Museum exhibition showing visual artists working with Dance. The show includes my 1989 dance, Contempt, with set by David Salle and costumes as a collaboration by Jeff Koons with David Salle. We are in a room that includes New York City Ballet,Tricia Brown and Merce Cunningham, and has artists Terry Winters, David Salle, Jeff Koons, and George Rouault showing their artwork and stage design side by side. I was not allowed to take photos but I snuc...k one in that you can see with a painting by David and the Jeff Koons costume pig. You also see a little item from the gift shop that includes the pig. You will see that the pig, though owned by the Armitage foundation for 30 years, now has a plaque that simply states that collector, Daniel Wolf owns it. I worked really hard and spent many hours making the exhibition happen. Though the staff knew I was coming, they did not offer to meet me or even give me free admission. I find that startling. I am in San Antonio, Texas. There are five missions here which were built in the 1700s to educate the hunter gatherer native peoples. This was a clever strategy for the Spanish to strengthen their forces against the French. They took the Indians into the mission where they were housed in 2 room living quarters and taught skills such as farming and masonry. They gave them European weapons and taught them how to shoot. sadly most of them died from European diseases such as smallpox.More from San Antonio soon as I explore the museum that has an exhibition of artist designing for dance in which Armitage Gone!! Dance is featured.

MIT media Lab friends in rehearsal. I see that Gary is intrigued by an Osage Orange. I think they are spectacular. Here is a field of them.

We just finished a showing with sound by the wonderful MIT media lab partner, Agnes Fury Cameron, who designed sound through accelerometers. Friends from the media lab joined and I was thrilled to see them so excited by Dance that they jumped up and started rushing around the room trying everything out.
