How are we keeping you safe during the COVID-19 pandemic? All of our gear gets a thorough cleanin’ after usage. For example, all of our PFDs are submerged in a cootie-fighting chemical bath, rinsed, and left to dry outdoors for 48-72 hours in between usage. Helmets and paddles are also disinfected after each use. Just one of the many ways ARO is dedicated to making your family’s rafting experience a safe and memorable one We value your continued suggestions and compliments regarding our current policies.

Meet Andrew! Known to us as Andrew, Andrew Birch, simply Birch, and/or Tall Andrew. Andrew grew up in Vestal, NY, but spent much of his childhood in the Adirondack Mountains with his family in Star Lake. After graduating high school, Andrew moved to Charleston, SC for college and to pursue sailing. These beautiful Adirondack mountains called him back (as they do to many of us) and now he resides in Lake Placid. Returning to his love of the mountains, Andrew has spent ...the past 3 winters as a ski instructor at Whiteface Mountain. (And speaking of mountains, he’s also a 46-er) Andrew has guided with ARO for 3 seasons now, also guiding group hiking & camping trips on local trails, caves, and in the high peaks. And why does he do it? Birch says At a young age my father told me to find the things in life that you love to do. Then do them. It’s the only way to find true happiness. So that’s what I did. I love people and the outdoors. Being able to take people on an adventures they’d never be able to experience without a guide. Just the look on people’s faces make it all the worth wild. Fun Facts about Birch: He and a large handful of our other river guides spent 26 days rowing 280 miles on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon this March. Andrew says It was a trip of a lifetime. Being able to share that experience with my brother and good friends made it even better. One last fun fact: As a kid, Andrew was known as the belly flop king. Been on a trip with Birch? Show him some love in the comments below

With our first full week of rafting in the books, we’d like to take the opportunity to share some of our recent reviews: This was our first time rafting in the Adirondacks and it was a phenomenal experience! Ace was a spectacular guide and very knowledgeable about the local terrain and history of the surrounding area. He navigated us with ease and amplified the experience with his affable demeanor. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and hope to take on more challenging courses ...next time via the Moose or Black Rivers! Per one of the guests in our party, this was the "most fun" she's ever had in her life. We also really appreciated the commitment to sanitation of the equipment, given that most us in the group work in the hospital and have witnessed our share of dismissive businesses regarding safety procedures. We couldn't have asked for a better way to complete our weekend Adirondacks trip and definitely look forward to future adventures with ARO! We appreciate all the hand sanitizer everywhere and the staff always wearing masks which made all of us feel very safe under the circumstances of COVID. We look forward to coming back for more adventures with ARO! Thanks again! I was very comfortable with the COVID precautions and thought they were safely done. MADD DOG made the trip exciting and fun! With all the COVID regulations and restrictions, you guys did a great job! lots of smiles in our group, thanks. Our managerial staff and guides tirelessly planned to make sure guests were provided with a positive and safe rafting experience under new COVID-19 guidelines. It has shown to be a collective effort on our end, but also a huge commitment from our guests. We are stoked to be doin’ what we do! Red, White, and (Labatt & Pabst) Blue! Did you know that we always offer a free beer (yeah, you read that right) to all rafting guests over 21 at our Black River location? One of the many reasons ARO is your premiere Upstate NY whitewater outfitter. Special thanks to Eagle Beverages in Oswego, NY for keeping our beers cold and thirst quenched. Have a safe holiday, everyone. Remember to wear your masks!

What social distancing looks like at our Hudson River base. Groups are assigned picnic tables 6-10 feet apart as their home base in the morning. Guides come to each group to outfit gear and answer any questions a group may have. A successful opening week in the books! We’re continuing to learn how to make our river trips the safest possible for our guests and guides. See ya Tuesday!
