FEATURED DRAWING OF THE WEEK The picture of this tiger was taken at the Ross Park Zoo in Syracuse NY while our family was visiting there. We have to give a quick shout out to our daughter, Samantha (Sami). She did the digital line drawing. She will be arriving in Seattle in the next day or two to pursue her career in photography and art and will continue to draw for Art To Save Animals.... Some interesting facts about tigers: 1. Tigers have eyes with round pupils, unlike domestic cats, which have slitted pupils. This is because domestic cats are nocturnal whereas tigers are crepuscular they hunt primarily in the morning and evening. 2. The stripes on each tiger are unique, like human fingerprints. Just like housecats, the markings on a tiger’s fur are also found on their skin, so even a shaved tiger would still show its stripes. 3. Tigers can sprint at over 60km/h for short distances. 4. Unlike almost all other big cats, tigers are adept swimmers. They enjoy bathing and often play in the water when young. As adults, they often swim several kilometers to hunt or to cross rivers, and at least one has been recorded to have swum almost 30km in a day. 5. Tigers are the largest of all cats, but also have the most variability in size. The largest subspecies, the Siberian tiger, grows to over 3.5m long with a mass of over 300k. The smallest subspecies, the Sumatran tiger, is only around 2m long and 100kg when fully-grown. 6. In the early 1900s, there were around 100,000 tigers throughout their range. Sadly, today an estimated total of around 3,000-4,500 exist in the wild. Whether you help through Art To Save Animals or not, please consider helping them through some organization. They are magnificent animals and it would be a tragedy to not have them in the wild.

FEATURED DRAWING OF THE WEEK Bats have a scary reputation, but they are actually great for nature. Bats can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour, and often consume their body weight in insects every night. Here are some more interesting facts about bats: -Bat can fly at speeds reaching 60 mph. -Bats can find their food in total darkness. They locate insects by emitting inaudible high-pitched sounds, 10-20 beeps per second and listening to echoes.... -There are 1,100 species of bats worldwide making up one-quarter of the world’s mammal population. There are forty different species of bats live in the United States. -There are only three species of "vampire bats" bats that live off the blood of animals. None of those species lives in the United States. -Some bats migrate south for the winter, while others hibernate through the cold winter months. During hibernation, bats can survive in freezing temperatures, even after being encased in ice. -Bat mothers can find their babies among thousands or millions of other bats by their unique voices and scents. -Austin is a seasonal home to North America’s largest urban population of Mexican free-tailed bats, which live beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge. Approximately 1.5 million bats reside there! -The world’s largest bat is the "flying fox" that lives on islands in the South Pacific. It has a wingspan of up six feet. -The world’s smallest bat is the bumble bee bat of Thailand, which is smaller than a thumbnail and weighs less than a penny. FEATURED DRAWING OF THE WEEK Owls are such interesting creatures There are as many as 220 different species of owls. They have existed for at least 58 million years. They cannot move their eyes from side to side, but they can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees to give them an excellent range of vision.... Many species have asymmetrical ears, with one ear located higher on the bird's head than the other. This helps them pinpoint sounds.
