Meet our 2021 #losangeles Finalist!: Paul Mpagi Sepuya’s photography foregrounds an entangled relationship between artist, subject and viewer moving across traditional portraiture, staging, and abstraction. With a self-conscious play of presentation and concealing, his pictures complicate queer and Black subject positions within surface and reflection, the presence of lens and mirror, and in rendering visible touch and trace. Recent exhibitions include a solo at Vielmetter L...os Angeles, a survey of work at CAM St. Louis, and a project for the 2019 Whitney Biennial . . . . @pagmi #finalist #losangeles #artadia #artistgrant #photographer #visualart #losangelesartist See more

Meet our 2021 #losangeles Finalist!: Yoshie Sakai is a multidisciplinary artist, in her video work she creates characters that function as avatars responding to and negotiating contemporary social issues of cultural identity, gender roles, and familial and personal relationships. As a colorful and subtly transgressive undercover cultural agent, she exposes the absurdities of a manipulative social structure while at the same time humorously struggling and reveling in those str...uctures as a participant. Her work infiltrates the psychological space of the viewer, giving form to our vulnerability and evoking, sometimes, nervous laughter . . . . @yoshiesakaiart #losangeles #visualart #videoart #losangelesartist #artistgrant #artadia #finalist See more

We are pleased to share that Artadia Awardee Cauleen Smith (Chicago 2015) has been selected as the winner of the fifteenth annual Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize! The prize, established in 2006 by jazz impresario, musician, and philanthropist George Wein to honor his late wife Joyce Alexandra (1928-2005), honors the achievement of an African-American artist who demonstrates great innovation, promise, and creativity. Thelma Golden, the Studio Museum’s director and chief cura...tor, said of Smith in a statement, Although she has described her subjects as ‘the fragile, the forgotten, the flawed, and the fugitive,’ the effect of her work is overwhelmingly one of plenitude, rich in its exploration of human complexities.
