In today’s @wsj , I give a behind-the-scenes tour of my home and discuss the ways my personal collection of antiquities is inspiring my next series. Link in bio.
Now through November 18th, @ashtonartgallery in San Diego is hosting Orange is the New Black, featuring works using orange as the main color or that deals with incarceration, restriction, and confinement. My piece ‘Bad Ideas’ has been included along dozens of other fantastic work.
Here I am working with a recent piece it is the first piece of an Anatolian violin-shaped head. It’s beautifully abstract, almost geometric. It’s 4,000 years old and really pierces history for me and I'm really fascinated with creating a texture that I can live with in my house. These days I’m really fascinated by learning and getting comfortable with the process of scanning and enlarging through print; changing and fixing the texture then creating rubber molds and building and making wax figures out of them so I can then make sand molds and bronze or metal sculptures. Something that I really know is history itself that is honestly translated into the present.
Also on display at the @ashtonartgallery is Lisa Beard’s beautiful piece, Walk Away.
A mash-up of broken light bulbs and currency origami ‘moneyflies’ embedded into and among a thick layer of paint, Bad Ideas is a play on the very intentional use of discarded everyday items. A play on feeling of disappointment connected to the failure of dreams-a composition of the brilliance and inspiration of ideas and the subsequent feelings of loss when those ideas don’t materialize. This piece is from 2016 and is now on display @ashtonartgallery in San Diego.
