We've had a rich history of supporting the arts and artist community here in Bedford-Stuyvesant including 11 years of sponsoring the Art Walk with the former SONYA. News on artist resident John Bjerklie: Mark your calendars: Saturday, June 4th at the Farm on Kent 320 Kent Ave. at 8:30 pm! Over the past nine months, twelve fellows in the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio have developed short documentaries for a new project entitled, JUST TO GET BY. This collection focuses on the increasing struggle to make ends meet in NYC at a time when 50% of the city’s population lives near or below the federal poverty level. Multiple perspectives on this... central theme are considered: health care and homelessness, disability and mental illness, the 24 hour service economy and access to the internet, to spiritual community and the right to memorial after death. Many projects have involved creative partnerships with artists and craftspeople who operate outside of privileged networks of exhibition and distribution. Others have attempted to cross perceived boundaries of generation, race or class. The resulting body of work grapples with the ideal of equality and the realities of asymmetry in process as well as product. To celebrate this new work, a special public preview will be held at The Farm on Kent (320 Kent Ave), a riverside green-space situated with an incredible view of the Williamsburg Bridge on Saturday June 4th starting at 8:30pm. The preview will be preceded by drinks and food and followed by a celebration back at UnionDocs. Check out the whole schedule below and stay tuned for updates on performances and line-up!
