May 7, 2019 at 7pm Resistance Cinema Presents: Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism is Turning the Internet Against Democracy Join us in the Parish Hall (12 West 11th Street) next Tuesday. In this era of data privacy breaches, "fake news" and filter bubbles, this essential film turns the focus toward the relationship between the internet and democracy. Tracing the internet's history as a publicly funded project in the 1960s to its full-scale commercialization today, the film re...veals how the democratizing potential of the internet has been radically compromised by the surreptitious collection of personal data and its sale to advertisers for financial and political gain. And while related debates tend to focus on the personal impact of the ethically questionable data-mining practices of a few isolated companies, Digital Disconnect shows how the engine driving these practices isn’t just about greed it’s actually threatening democracy. The screening is free of charge - donations gratefully received. Join us for this exciting and informative film. Bring a friend! See more

Ascension Outreach Presents Symbiotic Earth: a film and discussion on Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 2-6 p.m. Symbiotic Earth explores the life and ideas of scientific rebel Lynn Margulis who challenged entrenched theories of male-dominated science. Through numerous collaborations she caused a seismic shift in our understanding of life. Margulis’ symbiotic narrative presents an alternative to the destructive worldview that has led to climate change and extreme capitalism. With... James Lovelock she developed the Gaia Theory that all life is interconnected and interdependent. Her vision offers bold insights into health, society, and nature, and inspires creative approaches to our pressing environmental and social crises. The film and discussion will take place in the Church with Earth Ethics & Climate Crisis Panel & Discussion. The panelists will be Fritjof Capra (scientist & activist), John Feldman (NYU Professor of Biology and Environmental Sciences), Tyler Volk (filmmaker), and others. Nancy Rhodes of Encompass New Opera Theater will be the moderator. See more

This documentary features some of the most renowned Middle East scholars, journalists and activists providing insights and warnings about the dangers of escalating Middle East conflicts. This powerful film shines a spotlight on the motivations and supporters of these seemingly endless wars. Enemies of Peace offers diplomatic solutions, guided by principles of peace, justice, and cooperation. The film's Producer/Director Roland Marconi will be on hand for talk-back.
