This election will impact the rights that a woman has to make medical decisions for herself, and the governments budget for implementing legislation such as VAWA. Cast your vote and vote as if your daughter is a sexual assault survivor, your skin is not white, you parents need medical care, your spouse is an immigrant, and your water is unsafe. We will see you at the polls! #asiyahwomenscenter #gotv #muslimvote

Please join us in welcoming our newest Asiyah Women’s Center board member! Tasnia, we are so grateful to have you serve on our board Tasnia Ahamed is a licensed social worker and received her Master’s in Social Work from Stony Brook University. In her day job, she serves as the Domestic Violence Program Director at Turning Point for Women and Families. Tasnia's career has largely focused on counseling female survivors of domestic violence by addressing the safety, social, a...nd mental health needs of women facing violence at home. She has given presentations and participated in numerous events to raise awareness about domestic violence. She has previously also worked and volunteered with agencies such as VIBS: Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Womankind, Queens Mutual Aid, and others. Community service has always been a priority for Tasnia as she believes that the only way a community can thrive is if its members uplift each other. As a Bangladeshi-American and Muslim woman, Tasnia understands the struggles of Muslim New Yorkers and the unfortunate trend of bottling away hardship to exhibit strength. She envisions a community where we can talk about social struggle, especially domestic violence, as a means of healing, not as a whispered comment. Tasnia is excited to make this vision a reality. Happy 2nd Birthday to our organization, the Asiyah Women's Center! We received one of the best birthday gifts EVER by getting approved for a halal financed loan to purchase a HOME for domestic violence survivors. Now we can finally go shopping for a new home, and be able to triple our capacity of the women and children that we will serve. To make a birthday donation, you can venmo asiyahwomen or donate to our birthday fundraiser.... Thank you so much for your support and your well wishes! Our story: After years of witnessing domestic violence survivors with nowhere to go -- and watching the broken shelter system in NYC fall short in providing Muslim, Arab, South, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Black women with adequate shelter and care -- we knew we had to do something about it. So two years ago, we opened up the doors to the very first domestic violence center for our community. We are so honored to have -served over 175+ women and children -connected women with employment opportunities and English language courses -showed up in court with survivors against their abusers ---celebrated the humanity of our women through birthday parties, outings, and many celebrations.

Here’s how COVID-19 could uniquely impact intimate partner violence survivors which don't involve hitting but is clearly domestic violence: -Abusive partners may withhold necessary items, such as hand sanitizer or disinfectants. -Abusive partners may share misinformation about the pandemic to control or frighten survivors, or to prevent them from seeking appropriate medical attention if they have symptoms. -Abusive partners may withhold insurance cards, threaten to cancel ins...urance, or prevent survivors from seeking medical attention if they need it. -An abusive partner may feel more justified and escalate their isolation tactics. It's important to note that: -Programs that serve survivors may be significantly impacted - shelters may be full or may even stop intakes altogether. Survivors may also fear entering shelter because of being in close quarters with groups of people. Survivors who are older or have chronic heart or lung conditions may be at increased risk in public places where they would typically get support, like shelters, counseling centers, or courthouses. -Travel restrictions may impact a survivor’s escape or safety plan it may not be safe for them to use public transportation or to fly. Please know you are not alone.

Today we treated our residents to some homemade chocolate cinnamon ginger pancakes glazed with honey made with only organic products and with a whole lot of love we are more than a domestic violence shelter we are a tribe that looks out for each other and reframes what home should feel like for domestic violence survivors. #asiyahwomenscenter

Thank you Zainab Iqbal for writing about the Asiyah Women's Center in the Bklyner! Check out the full article here: We had realized that there was really no place for women and children in the Muslim community to have somewhere to go where they can get the support they need to leave a really abusive situation, said Darwish. Seeing how many women in our community require that assistance, but there was nothing like this to exist, we decided to build this.

The power of community is incredible! After we posted about a domestic violence survivor and her 2 year old child transitioning out of our center, we received hundreds of messages and comments from supporters offering to buy furniture for her, donate supplies, and contribute to her 1st months rent. Alhamdullilah, we are very happy to report that she has now moved into a stable home of her own, is finishing up her college degree this month, and is ready to continue to build a better life for her and her child. We strive to empower women and children who are recovering from deeply traumatic personal circumstances create better lives for themselves, and without your help this wouldn’t have possible. So from the Asiyah Women’s Center to you, thank you so much

VOTE TODAY!! As if your life depends on it because for someone it does. For someone, their lives depend on access to healthcare, public benefits, and being treated like a decent human being in the court of law by not having their constitutional rights compromised because of their sex, gender, religion, race, and sexual orientation. #nycmuslimvote #asiyahwomenscenter #muslimsvote #electionday #primaries
