The Origins of Christmas Customs A. The Origin of Christmas Tree Just as early Christians recruited Roman pagans by associating Christmas with the Saturnalia, so too worshippers of the Asheira cult and its offshoots were recruited by the Church sanctioning Christmas Trees.[7] Pagans had long worshipped trees in the forest, or brought them into their homes and decorated them, and this observance was adopted and painted with a Christian veneer by the Church. Your New Party Trick: Echolocation August 29th, 2013 | by Txchnologist Staff Human Echolocation... Echolocation, one of the most enviable skills of the animal kingdom, is within our reach. A new study shows that anyone can teach themselves to navigate by listening to reflected sounda technique known as echolocation famously used by bats and dolphins but not without some hard work and dedication. While scientists have known for some time that blind people can learn to echolocate, recent research led by Lutz Wiegrebe, a neurobiology professor at Germany’s Ludwig Maximilians University, shows that anybody can learn to do it using just a headset with a microphone and a pair of earphones. To acquire this new skill, the study’s subjects emitted vocal clicks. These were then picked up by the headset’s microphone, which was then passed to a processor. The processor calculated the echoes around the subject within milliseconds, and then played the echoes back through the earphones. Because the output changed depending on the person’s orientation in space, the volunteer learned to associate these processed echoes with the distribution of sound-reflecting surfaces. "After several weeks of training, the participants in the experiment were able to locate the sources of echoes pretty well," Wiegrebe said in a statement. This shows that anyone can learn to analyze the echoes of acoustic signals to obtain information about the space around him. Sighted people have this ability, too; they simply don’t need to use it in everyday situations. The study was published this week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. "There's compelling data that older individuals participating in exercise programs show dramatic improvement in function and abilities," says Cedric Bryant, chief science officer for the American Council on Exercise in San Diego. In fact, experts suggest that many ills once attributed to normal aging are now being viewed as a result of chronic inactivity.Exercise may also benefit the body in ways we can't see: deep within our cells. A growing pile of evidence suggests it chan...ges the way DNA behavesfor the better. For example, a single 20-minute workout appears to help tune-up DNA, allowing muscles to work better and more efficiently, according to a recent study published in Cell Metabolism. So, will exercise make you live longer? Hard to say. But those who exercise regularly will generally see a drop in their risk for many of the diseases and disabilities tied to aging. See more
