Foot traction is essential for safe winter travel, but what do you wear, and when? Snowshoes are designed to help you "float" on the surface of deep snow. Use ...them when snow accumulation is significant to prevent postholing, and anytime snow is deeper than eight inches in the High Peaks. Microspikes and crampons help with stability in icy conditions. Use microspikes for thin, flat ice, and crampons for thick ice and steep slopes. Practice is important. Try out your gear in a familiar place and make sure you know how to use it properly before taking it on the trail. On your hike, stop as often as needed to put on or change gear. #HikeSmartNY Click here to learn more about the 10 Hiking Essentials: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28708.html.
