Attica Historical Society 06.02.2021

Message from Attica Historical Society President Brian B. Fugle: Many books and many newspaper articles have been written about the "Gray Walls" on Exchange Street. A year from this coming September will mark the 50th anniversary of the uprising that took place inside those walls. The year 2021 will also mark he 90th year the walls have graced the landscape of Exchange Street. The Attica Historical Society has asked Anita Ripstein-Hayes to expand her article "The Gray Wall...s" , which appeared in "Historical Wyoming" in 1983-84, concerning just why and how the prison was built, into book form. The Society is happy to announce she has consented to do so. She also was asked if she would include in her book the memories of residents of the Village of Attica during the time of the uprising as to what their lives were during this time in history. No book has ever told the stories of the people themselves - what they felt, what they did, what they feared, how their lives were affected by this event in Attica's history. Mrs. Hayes has also consented to do so, noting only the stories of the people and not of the riot itself will be written. If you have a memory of those days in September, no matter how long or short your story may be, PLEASE SHARE by sending itt Mrs. Hayes via her email [email protected] or mailing to the Attica Historical Society, PO Box 24, Attica 14011 or email the Society at [email protected]. We had hoped to do in-person interviews but tdue o COVID-19 that is not possible. See more

To all of you, family, friends and readers, who wished me Happy Birthday - a big thank you for remembering me. Some of you have asked how I spent the day - ...no cooking, no laundry, no cleaning. Just doing what I love and that is researching the village we all love. And of course answering the phone from all my kids, grand kids and great grands calling to wish Granny a Happy Birthday. Even got a video of my soon to be 5 yr old great-grandson Ruger riding a sheep in the local rodeo in Nevada 2nd place pretty good for a little cowboy. Thank You! Thank You! And you too Nate you are doing GREAT!! To Camilla thanks for the Happy Birthday concert. Love you all! See more

As one gets older one looks back into memories of days of summer. As the 4th of July is here those memories focus in to memories of that day within a lifetime. There were parades, fireworks and picnics. As a child, I do not recall festivities within the village but many, many years before the 4th of July in the Village of Attica was celebrated in style. The 4th of July 1904 was declared the best ever celebrated in the village. The celebration was scheduled to begin at 10 o’...Continue reading

The Attica Historical Society is asking for your help: Does anyone recognize the location where this photo was taken. We do know the ID of the man with the Attica Hose Cart. We do know it was NOT taken at the Middlebury Academy in Wyoming. The structure is of stone with no windows showing. Also the society is looking for any back issue of the former Attica Penny Saver. If you do please leave a message and we will contact you. Just a reminder the Museum is closed due to the virus.
