Here are shots that I took of a Garrard Model 70 three-speed, automatic turntable ($89.95 when sold). Introduced in 1973, it resided in the lower part of the c...ompany’s mid-tier ‘tables. At that time, the company’s flagship was the Zero 100c ($209.95 when sold), which featured the company’s famous Zero Tracking Error Tonearm. The Model 70 was advertised as having a low-mass aluminum arm with an adjustable counterweight that allows for zero-balancing before stylus force adjustment, spring-type anti-skating device, also adjustable; two-point record stack support, and an upgraded Synchro-Lab motor. Checkout the transparent housing around the pick-up base. In 1960, Garrard became a division of Plainview, New York-based Plessey Consumer Products. In 1979, it was sold again, this time to Brazil’s IGB Gradiente Electronics. Eventually, most of the production was moved there and the last of the British R&D offices were completely phased out by 1992. In 2018, after a period during which the Garrand mark was leased to numerous consumer electronic companies, Cadence Audio, who also own SME, took stewardship of the Garrard brand. Takeaway: The Model 70 was by no means among the best of Garrard’s offerings at the time. Though for many, it was a gateway drug for entry into the high-end of this iconic audio brand. Early Vitaphone demonstration in 1926. The system used phonograph records synced with film to give sound to movies. This was the last "sound on disc" system o...f this type and the only one to become commercially successful, having over 1,000 short films use this format over a 5 year period. Although it only had a frequency response of 4.3 khz which is seemingly questionable by today's standards, it easily surpassed any audio system prior to that point, especially considering that it coincided with the development of a new full-frequency-range condenser microphone which could capture a whisper a few feet away, which the audience had never experienced before prior to 1926. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitaphone See more

Here are more shots from my recent visit to Audio Classics in Vestal, New York. Located close to the McIntosh factory, it’s the largest McIntosh dealer. But AC ...sells many other brands, including Mark Levinson. Shown here is the ML No. 515 turntable ($10,000 or $12,500 with Ortofon Cadenza Bronze cart. (shown)/all prices USD). Developed with VPI, the 515 is built around a 20 lb. aluminum platter, connected via a triple belt drive system to a high-torque motor that is mounted on a separate chassis and housed in an isolated enclosure. As evidenced by the belt design, which is not a VPI design, the 515 is not merely a rebadged VPI. Its chassis is made from a vinyl-wrapped MDF and aluminum sandwich. Specialized feet, record weight, and platter mat manage vibrations. Shown with Mcintosh electronics, and Legacy Audio Concert Master speakers ($39,999). See my SoundStage!
