With vinegar hard to find, I have been trying recipes for fermented pickles. This one is a winner! The best ones were made with whole cucumbers, but the spears turned out ok too. I am trying slices today....will let you know! Love a good dill slice on a burger! The skinny (without reading a long story) is: 2 lbs pickling cucumbers... 1 garlic clove 2-3 grape leaves 1 head of dill 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes 2 Tbsp salt 6 cups water Put all ingredients in a glass jar or other non reactive container (glass, enamel, plastic) with some sort of weight on the top to keep the pickles below the liquid...a small plate, a ziplock bag full of water.... and leave at room temperature for a few days until tasty. I think mine took about a week. When they are perfect, store in the refrigerator.... if any are around long enough! If a white scum forms on the surface of the liquid, don't worry. It is part of the fermentation process. https://www.feastingathome.com/fermented-pickles/

The Aurora Garden stand is open with zucchini, cucumber, Napa cabbage and lots of flowers for the holiday weekend. Hanging baskets are on sale. $10.00 each and 2/$18.00 or $9.00 each for 2 or more. Everyone have a happy and safe Fourth of July!
This nice hanging fern was on it's way to the Lake Stand to be sold......too late now! My little song sparrow fledged four babies a week or so ago and has started on a second brood. One egg so far.
It won't be long now! The first figs usually ripen around the Fourth of July, although not enough to sell until around the 10th. I am forced to eat them until then
Today the weather station at Scipio reports a soil temperature of 61F at 2 inches. At 10 inches it is still 53F, but we are getting there! Time to risk planting some of those early tomatoes??!!
Happy Spring! Finally we are having some warmer weather this week. The last rain has finally warmed the soil above 50F, at the Scipio weather station it is now 53F at a 2 inch depth. That is still cold for this late in May, but warm enough to begin to plant some of the hardier vegetables. Cabbage, broccoli, beets, peas and lettuce will do all right, but tomatoes beans and peppers should wait for warmer soil temperatures. Morgan's Half Acre Produce near Auburn NY is open with plants from Aurora Ridge Gardens as well as flowers, asparagus, rhubarb and baked goods. Time to get gardening!
