Our principal Angel Ayón began advocating to preserve the Mount Morris Fire Watchtower in Marcus Garvey Park in 2000, and advised all stakeholders along the way. The newly restored tower, located in the heart of Harlem, reopened in the Fall of 2019 and since then, has won three awards, including the latest, a 2020 New York State Historic Preservation Award! In Governor Cuomo’s announcement of this most recent honor, he touted the project as an extraordinary commitment to preserving New York State’s built history. It won’t be easy, according to AYON Studio Principal Angel Ayón, as he addressed APT_NE’s audience at their latest virtual event How the Future of Historic Preservation will Change as a Result of COVID-19. It will require us to understand and take responsibility for the history of systemic racism within preservation, as an institution and a profession. It means better leadership and mentorship... training, and active recruitment to better reflect the diversities of our communities. Docomomo International announced that Uta Pottgiesser, who co-wrote Reglazing Modernism with Angel Ayón, will be their new Chair starting in January 2022! We warmly congratulate Uta, a fellow expert on Modernist architectural interventions. The election results will be formalized at the next Council Meeting on August 31, during the 16th International Docomomo Conference in Tokyo, Japan 2020+1. Uta’s term will begin in conjunction with the relocation of Docomomo Headquarters to Delft University of Technology, where she serves as Chair and Professor of Heritage & Technology.
