NEGATIVE INTEREST RATES and YOU. July 24th, 2020 Central banks have embarked on the most dangerous monetary experiment ever devised, and with reckless abandon.... Zero interest rates were used to dull the impact of the Great Recession. Now, in a last-ditch move to save most of the developed world from failing, negative interest rates are the norm. This has the potential to cause catastrophic damage. Savers are being punished. Equity bubbles are getting worse, and the entire risk-and-reward system that has been the basis of investing for the last several centuries is completely unhinged. Any investor from those with a modest nest egg in a 401(k) right up to traders for the largest banks in the world needs to adapt to the new market forces this unleashes now. The cost of not doing so will only get higher and higher as time passes, and these policies further erode finances, bonds, and the stock market.
