upcoming required reading for all people living in the United States and well, probably across the globe. New FYSEM text?
Today is Chinua Achebe's birthday. He would have been 87 years old. Professor Achebe served as the Charles P. Stevenson Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard for nearly 20 years. It would be far too difficult to sum up his accomplishments here but suffice to say that Professor Achebe was an intellectual force whose work broke loose Europe's vice grip on intellectual authority. His work turned the eyes of the world southward not toward Africa as the "heart of darkness"... but toward a geography whose whose cultural, intellectual and artistic contributions had been suppressed. Of teaching and learning he said, "What you want to do as a teacher is to make people aware of the complexity of experience - that our little corner is real and very important, but it is not the whole. And we should make the effort to understand as much of the rest as we can possibly manage. This is not a threatening position: it is an enriching one. This is what education should aim to do: to draw out from us what is there so that it can interact with whats outside." See more
Please consider volunteering this weekend.
An excellent analysis of the NYS Excelsior Scholarship written by Bard alum, Justin Fernando!
