Today, we highlight the creation of a new Community Accountability, Response, and Emergency Services (CARES) structure on Barnard’s campus to uphold community safety. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and guests are of the utmost importance to Barnard. CARES represents a conceptual and organizational evolution at Barnard in order to promote community safety and well-being. The new structure includes Community Safety, focused on campus security concer...ns while incorporating new approaches to practice, breaks out a first response team, sensitive to the individual challenges and crises faced on a college campus, and enfolds the Nondiscrimination and Title IX office, ensuring equity and collaborating across these areas of expertise. Changes will be implemented over the course of 2021. Read more at our link bio #barnardcollege #barnard2025 #barnard

The Regular Decision deadline is 6 days away! Today, we highlight Barnard’s STARs rating. The College has earned a STARS Silver rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. With more than 900 participants in 40 countries, AASHE’s STARS prog...ram is the most widely recognized framework for comprehensive, publicly reported information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance. The STARS report demonstrates how sustainability and climate action can and should be incorporated into every administrative and academic department, assessing not only emissions and waste but also diversity, compensation practices, and student involvement. The year-and-a-half-long journey to completing the STARS assessment was a collaborative effort, led by Barnard’s Office of Sustainability and Climate Action, with involvement from more than 30 departments around campus. We can be proud of our Silver rating, said professor Sandra Goldmark, the director of campus sustainability and climate action. It shows us that Barnard is, and has been, moving in the right direction. There is more to be done, but we want to take the time to recognize the hard work of so many that made this achievement possible. #barnardcollege #barnard #barnard2025

Today we highlight the Barnard Library’s new quaranzine collection. Since April, the Barnard Zine Library staff have been collecting COVID-19 themed zones made by womxn, non-binary people, and all members of the Barnard community. Barnard Library, recognizing the importance of these items as artistic and historical artifacts, is actively collecting quaranzines as a part of its permanent collection of some 11,000 zines. I thought the zine DIY ethos fit perfectly with the conc...ept of people creating their own history of this strange time, explains Jenna Freedman, curator of the Barnard Zine Library. Though zines are traditionally analog products, quaranzine making gained traction online as artists disseminated their work on social media aspart of an independent, virtual #quaranzinefest in early April (tagline: Inoculate against boredom). Freedman after noticing the quaranzines propagate online and the efforts of Barnard media specialist Karl-Mary Akre to document students’ experiences through audio and video offered to purchase them for the Zine Library’s collection, with a special emphasis on the experiences of women and nonbinary people. I called the request for zines, ‘Who Better to Document This Experience Than Everyone?’ Freedman says. To date, the Zine Library has amassed 200 quaranzines from artists around the world, including those in the Barnard community. Gabi Levy ’22’s contribution, Empty Chairs at EmptyTables, features screenshots of found text from pandemic-era emails (your flight has been cancelled), recipes (how to make whipped coffee), Google searches (the lyrics for theLes Misérablessong and zine’s namesake), advertisements (toilet paper stock update!) and online messages (anyone get their severance yet?).
