Driving After Stroke: Getting around is important and pretty much everyone wants to keep their independence. An injury to the brain from a stroke can alter how you do things. It can affect your memory, reflexes, judgment, thinking, or problem solving. Most important it can affect the safety of you, your family, and others. Always be sure to check with your doctor before you start driving again after a stroke. You may also need to check with your local Department of Motor Ve...hicles (DMV) to see if your provider must submit a health status before you may drive again. DMVs in different locations or states may have specific requirements for stroke survivors to drive. - Your vehicle may require modifications according to the degree of disability post-stroke.These may be temporary or might even be permanent. - A rehabilitation specialist in your area may help to evaluate if modifications are required for your vehicle and any training if needed. - Your DMV also may have financial assistance if mobility equipment is required. Ask for the Office of Driver Safety. It is recommended not to drive for: - At least 2 weeks post Trans Ischemic Attack (TIA) - At least 4 weeks after a stroke Be Safe! Elisabeth Tissiere, who led the class, was able to connect to each individual in the class, provide the necessary information for preparation of childbirth, as well as give her own personal experiences as a Mother, a CLC, and an RN. The class not only helped to educate me on the different possibilities, but helped to put my mind at ease in areas where I didn’t even know there was uncertainties. - Casey Downing, Childbirth Express Participant Get prepared for life's greatest adventure.
