Billy James Johnson lost his life and identity when the ship he called home was attacked on Dec 7, 1941. This is the story of how he and 270 of his shipmates go...t their names back. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Then join us December 22 for a more indepth version of How a Sailor Got His Name Back, complete with expert interviews and details of how the identifications were made. As of November 2020 the Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency has given back the names to 270 of USS Oklahoma’s unidentified. Fireman First Class Billy James Johnson became the 200th sailor positively identified on February 26, 2019. His case highlighted the complexity of the project, as the fragments that made up his final remains, were found in several different caskets. Johnson is now at rest, and is remembered along with millions of other Veterans in the national cemetery system.

For over 20 years the Employee Association at the Bath VA Medical Center has partnered with the Knights of Columbus (KOC) to sponsor Care and Share. The program allows employees and volunteers to donate new toys for the holidays to children in need, whose family has signed up with the KOC. Voluntary Service coordinates the bin drop off locations, pickups and delivery of the new toys to KOC. The Bath VA Medical Center Homeless program recently accepted a donation of 100 laundry baskets filled with household items from the Ithaca Elks Lodge #636. Pictured are Homeless program Social Workers Lyndsey Stillman and Amber Watson. We are very fortunate to have the Elks support our Veterans and the programs here at the Bath VA.

The Bath VA Medical Center held a drive thru Homeless Veterans Stand Down on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at the American Legion Post 442, 71 Old Ithaca Road, Horseheads, NY. Due to COVID 19 a drive thru orchestrated by Amber Watson; social worker in the Homeless Veterans program, was put together to ensure social distancing and masking were adhered to for every one’s safety. VA staff distributed surplus military items including back packs, boots, clothing, sleeping bags a...nd more. A packet was handed out to each attendee containing socks , tooth brushes, hand sanitizer, mask, T-shirts, blankets, information from other community providers and VA programs not in attendance including Suicide Prevention/Crisis Line, Social Security, Catholic Charities and the American Red Cross to name a few and The Food Bank of the Southern Tier had their mobile pantry on site to distribute bags of food to attendees. Over 95 homeless or at risk of becoming homeless Veterans registered and attended the event. See more

September was Suicide Prevention Month. Staff, veterans and community memebers helped to spread awareness by participating in the 20 miles and/or 20 days of Virtual Walk. Thank you to all who contributed and made this event a big success! Remember that suicide is everyone's business and every person can play a part in awareness and prevention.
