Beacon Public Space 16.01.2021

Every great city has great public spaces. The city's long term public interest is always greater than any one private interest. Balancing the two is the challenge. https://www.nytimes.com//beacon-new-york-gentrification.ht

January 14, 2019: A remnant of Beacon's old Main Street that you can still see today. Here you see a concrete stoop left that was never removed when much of Beacon's Main Street was razed west of what is now Route 9D. An entire neighborhood was razed as part of the national Urban Renewal plans which envisioned a wider 9D buttressed with 11 story buildings and which made way for the one story industrial buildings we still have on Main St.as referenced recently in the NY Times. Beacon's new development can be seen on the right and the Municipal Building can be seen on the left. https://www.nytimes.com//beacon-new-york-gentrification.ht

Main Street, early evening on March 4, 2019. Much props to Beacon's own Ori Alon - the unnamed artist in this story! Main Street is Beacon's most important public space. Let's keep that in mind as we move forward. Given the scale of the street, it's visual relationship to Mount Beacon and the Hudson River as it ties the two, literally and figuratively, it seems more neighborly and thoughtful to maintain and build up the 3 story city that already exists throughout Main Street.... The width of the street just does not warrant 4 story neighbors. It's all about scale. https://www.nytimes.com//beacon-new-york-gentrification.ht
