We extend warm congratulations to our next J@A artist performing in July, Darius Jones, for winning the Rising Star-Alto Saxophone award in the 67th Annual Down...Beat International Critics Poll announced yesterday. We also congratulate such past-and-future J@A artists as Mary Halvorson who once again was recognized as best guitarist, as was Joe Lovano for tenor saxophone, Steve Swallow for electric bass, and, playing at Atlas this October, the ageless Warren Smith who, at the tender age of 85, was awarded Rising Star-Percussion! Bravo to these great artists and to all the awardees -- see you in a month for Shades of Black. http://downbeat.com//downbeat-announces-winners-of-2019-cr

Four esteemed veterans of the Downtown NYC jazz scene converge to create a raucous ruckus in the quartet Music for a Free World, led by baritone saxophonist and WFMU DJ Dave Sewelson. Joining Dave is Steve Swell on trombone, the Hudson Valley's own Marvin Bugalu Smith on drums and the man who started our Monday jazz sessions over five years ago (at Dogwood as Quinn's awaited its certificate of occupancy), William Parker on bass. Their self-titled recording will be available for sale along with other highlights from these remarkable artists' gargantuan discographies.
