The BEAT family sends a MASSIVE happy birthday to our champion, our leader, the greatest of all time -- James Kim! James founded BEAT back in 2009 to put students with disabilities in the driver’s seat when it comes to arts education: highlight their abilities by teaching them HOW make music themselves, instead of simply assuming they can’t do it and letting them observe from the sidelines. Eleven years later, BEAT has since expanded into four programs offered nationwide that supports all our youth in finding their voice and advocating for a better tomorrow through Hip Hop. Our greatest fear since the start of the pandemic was leaving our learners with disabilities behind -- which is why we quickly adjusted our teaching methodology so that we continued to be fully accessible and inclusive, even in a virtual setting. Since the lockdown, we’ve successfully facilitated over 50 workshops with day habilitation programs like AHRC-NYC and QSAC, and continued our eleven-year partnership with the students at the Lavelle School for the Blind.
