IT'S NOT ABOUT THE PROFESSION. IT'S ABOUT THE DISCRIMINATION OF STUDENTS AT BOCES, 2/3 RECEIVE SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES, AND THE PRESUMPTION THAT IT'S OKAY TO... PUT THEM IN THE WAY OF COVID AND HARMFUL CHEMICALS. If you were have been watching this page and the BOE meetings you know that the BCSD BOE refuses to address rampant abelism in our schools. Comments made by Jean Miccio (a freelance employee) were meant to quash the rights of students by calling parents out as discriminatory against the janitorial profession. Couldn't agree more that this was always about respect for this profession, and rich since some of the parents speaking out are janitors themselves. Colette Dow and Ed Reder thanked Jean for her comments--an interloper who has no right speaking to parents in such a disrespectful tone. (What happened to the civility policy?) See video. The BOE can continue to deflect attention away from the main issue: 1-the BOE is promoting ableism; 2-the BOE needs unconscious bias training (Dictionary definition: Ableist language is language that is offensive to people with disability. These terms are strong slurs against people with disability, are very offensive and should never be used. A word's meaning cannot be erased with good intentions.); 3-we want Jessica to admit that her comment that started this firestorm was careless, apologize and acknowledge that what she said was discriminatory, and 4-we want the District and BOE to add disability to the SAAC discrimination committee and agenda that we are spending good tax payer money on. This is a teaching moment, one that would speak volumes to our students about tolerance, it would spark awareness and build back trust in the BOE. We could not say this better than the press did in 2011 (https://bit.ly/3oInGcK) when Newt Gingrich suggested kids take on the dangerous and complex job of janitors at a young age. "This isn't about labor economics. It's about respect...In his eyes, a janitor's job just doesn't mean much. It's so easy, a child could do it." Please join us at the mic on Wednesday and help clarify that WORDS matter. That the future of ALL students matters in our District.
