We are excited to be part of the transformation of the Hudson Valley. Recent news in Hudson Valley magazine and Chronogram highlights a project we have been working on to repurposed the industrial heritage of the Valley for new creative manufacturing.

Many people have dreams where they find an extra room in their house or apartment that they never noticed before. I frequently hear people express feeling in their dreams a sense of wonder and excitement mixed with bafflement (how did I not notice this before?) Since this is about architecture, not psychology, I will only consider how this relates to space. Those dream rooms, those spacial potentials that exist within the matrix of the mundane are exactly where Architecture is located; and that sense of wonder and surprise and feeling that this should have always been this way is the essence of design.

The other day I read an article in the New Yorker about how all of the ancient sculptures we see were polychrome. This totally changes our view of sculpture from an endeavor based on form to one that is much more complex, based on the interplay between form and color. When I was in school we made models out of chipboard or foam core, as pure imaginings of form, places for the interplay of light and shadow. An actual building is something different, a built building existing ...in all of the senses- sight, sound, smell, and perhaps most importantly memory. All of these things are generated from complexity The varying interplays of light on color, the way color changes and shifts as the light shifts creates another dimension of complexity beyond the white wall. As our days lengthen into our long dark winter I will be thinking more on color as I remember the vanished colors of summer. #ancientsculpture #luisbaragan #color #memory See more

There is a saying in Architecture- "Form follows function" which means that the way a building looks should follow from how it is used. Sometimes the function creates the form, like in this picture of stairs worn down by centuries of feet. But for most buildings function changes over time, how we live today is very different from how we lived 100 or alone thousand years ago, and even how we live through our own lives, single, a couple, children, children moving out, grandki...ds visiting, these ebbs and flows of life mean constantly changing function. How do buildings adapt and grow to match their form to their function? A house that responds to the rhythm of the seasons, bringing new insight with each change and a house that responds to the rhythm of aging bringing form that follows function is what we hope to achieve. Architecture is as much an art about time as space. #time #architecture #formfollowsfunction #wellscathedral See more
