The first time I stepped foot into Brooklyn was in 2002. I took what seemed like an endless ride on the C train from Washington Heights (where I lived in a 5th Fl walk up) to Clinton Hill. I had been invited to a Vegan BBQ in @hollenbackcommunitygarden. Neither vegan, nor a gardener at the time, I loved the welcoming vibe from neighbors and within a year, moved a few doors down from that garden. Three friends and I rented the upper duplex in this brownstone. A Polish immigra...nt who had worked in the garment district for most of his life recently bought the building as an investment and took a chance on renting to 4 credit-less recent grads. During the 4 years we lived there, my roommates and I made many great memories together: staging fashion photo shoots, hosting countless Pinot nights on the stoop, filming my 2 short films (one of which took place on the rooftop in the middle of a January snow storm), and witnessing hilarious encounters like the one involving then-visitor @mrCraigRobinson searching for a spare house key in a hollow rock underneath the mature (and thorny) rose bush. Living there surrounded by so much love even helped me to cope with the passing of my father. I’ve since moved to Crown Heights and established roots but I couldn’t think of any better place to begin my Brooklyn journey than in that brownstone. I often drive past the building to reminisce. We share tender glances and show off our newly formed wrinkles to each other. This place will always hold a special place in my heart. I used to dislike carnations because I thought they were so plain, but now they are one of my favorite flowers for their staying power. These babies will last a month (no joke!) if you change the water 1x/wk and add some plant food. Just be sure to compliment them with a pretty vase. Gorgeous!
