Apologies for the long hiatus!Another baby Babel-er was born. But now we are back and look who’s on this months cover of Dance Magazine!! #Repost @dancemagazine @keonemadridand@_marimadrid sit around their kitchen tablea la quarantinetheir fingertips brushing the surface, tapping to hidden dynamics of a@bensolleetrack as they weave in and out of one another's arms. The video, titled "Built for This," is a danced message of gratitude for health-care workers. Had a p...andemic not shuttered the dance industry, they'd be unlikely to be in their San Diego home. COVID-19 way-laid both the Chicago run of "Once Upon a One More Time" (their new @britneyspears musical coming to Broadway) and the New York City performances of their first full-length production, @beyondbabelshow. It also took a toll on their own healthboth the Madrids and their now 1-year-old daughter Numah contracted the illness. All have since, fortunately, recovered. Despite everything, the powerhouse couple still has much in the works, including choreographing both #TheKarateKid and@onemoretimebway for Broadway, expanding their San Diego dance studio and working on a top-secret@disney project. Their wholesome brand of hip hop continues to connect with audiencesperhaps especially during this tumultuous time. As the country carries on the fight against racism, sickness, intolerance and abuse, they find inventive ways to use their sincere movement to encourage the best of their audience. This is a time of constant learning and listening. Everyday brings new awareness and understanding. The key is to actively be a part of the ever evolving conversation and to be open to change. #Repost @_marimadrid I take off my shoes, I put on Little Dragon, I dance around pointing my toes, so what makes me connected to Hip-Hop, to Black Culture? A lot. Hip-Hop is the undeniable base of my dance language, though how I move may look very different now, 21 years into ex...ploring my craft. . The specific community me, and many of my friends and colleagues are associated with, have been calling our style "Urban Dance," for the past handful of years, an already floating term that our classes were being called. One that we eventually decided to run with. But in doing much unpacking these past couple weeks, it is clear to us that this word won't work. Anyone else who associates with this term, please have a deep dig with yourself, sit in any discomfort, and question alllllll angles of this term. If you share the same sentiment, feel free to use this image and statement to stand with us. We are not perfect y'all. We Americans all live in this culture that is engrained with racism at its very fabric, but we are trying to identify any racist rhetoric in our lives and eradicate it. . So now what? What are we? Well, we are currently gathering community leaders to have these discussions on how to move forward. How to unify. Yes at the end of the day it's just dance, but when we own studios, throw events, and have a younger generation coming up behind us, we want to have answers. Small steps. See more
