We can tear up a dance floor and put it all back together again. We can talk loud in public. We can be fierce. We can be small. We can be mighty.... We can be too much. We can be just enough, just in time. We can. We have to. Bill T. Jones, "Last Night on Earth" In 1995, "Last Night on Earth" by Bill T. Jones with Peggy Gillespie was released. The autobiographical work challeges audiences' expectations about race, sex and politics in provocative avant-garde compositions dealing with racism, homophobia, AIDS, and interracial romance. Published nearly 26 years ago, Bill T.'s thoughts echo today, this month, this year, and offer up all the possibilities yet to come.

Let's talk about "canceling"! Join Bill T. Jones at 3pm for "When Great Artists Behave Badly" facilitated through The Barnes Foundation (@barnesfoundation)! Moderated by Paula Marantz Cohen, Bill T. joins Aruna D’Souza, Erich Hatala Matthes, and Martha Lucy, to delve into the feasibility of separating the art from the artist and discuss how museums navigate moral challenges in assessing their collections. In recent years, reports of toxic personal behavior have led to the rec...onsiderationand sometimes outright cancelingof the work of many artists, from living filmmakers to long-deceased painters. For some, these reckonings are necessary to develop a supportive and accountable community. For others, it conflates the art with the artist and represents inappropriate censorship. This event is free to join, you can register with our link below! https://www.barnesfoundation.org//when-great-artists-behav Image above: Paul Gauguin. Haere Pape (detail), 1892. BF109.
