In Memoriam Norton Juster, the architect, educator and children’s book author, would laugh at being referred to as a towering figure. He passed away on March 8th, 2021, so we can call him that now, without fear of a phone call, mocking such seriousness. As students and practitioners of architecture, we learn from, collaborate and consult with innumerable impressive people. For BKSK partner Harry Kendall, Norton was the first and most enduring of that very large category.... He enrolled in Norton and Earl Pope’s environmental design course in 1972, as a Hampshire College freshman, and never looked back. That introduction to the discipline by a kind, gregarious, insightful polymath was, for Harry, a vision to live up to. To the degree that BKSK models a humane approach to this profession, he gives lead credit to professor Juster, as great an influence as anyone could ever hope for.

[Tammany Hall] was really designated for its social history, so that was another gateway for me to really focus on Chief Tamanend, which led to the Lenape, which led to reading about their creation story, says BKSK partner Todd Poisson, who led the design and who, during the design development, would draw turtles with his daughter in his lap. ... Early in the process, Poisson consulted with The Lenape Center‘s cofounders Joe Baker and Hadrien Coumans. One of our raison d’ê...tre has been to counter the invisibility and erasure of our people in the homeland, says Coumans, an adopted member of the WhiteTurkey/Fugate family of the Lenape. Baker, who is the Center’s executive director and enrolled member at Delaware Tribe, concludes, Our history is complex, one of the diasporic branches stemming from a trunk of many thousands of years of indigenous presence in the homeland, to resistance and survival through the centuries of colonization.
