A COCKROACH MEANS WHAT IN HAWAII?! You should know that word, phrases and gestures can mean something totally different in other parts of the world. Welp, the same goes for the beautiful tropical islands of Hawaii. I'm fortunate not to have to share my residence with roaches or vermin of any kind but occasionally I will get that one waterbug/cockroach that flies in and disturbs the WHOLE SANITY of my household. I'm telling you I can't take it. However, in Hawaii they're not k...nown as cockroach but a B-52 Bombah.lol Hawaiian Pidgin English, known locally as Pidgin, is spoken by many Hawaii residents, and words and phrases from lelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language) has also become the norm here in the Islands. Here's some other words you maybe interested in... Cockroach means to steal/stealing. Ex. I was at Sunset Beach last night and someone wen cockroach my wallet! Chicken Skin means goosebumps Ex. My cat was staring at a corner in my room and I got all chicken skin." Grinds/Grindz means food or a meal; often spelled with a z instead of an s. Ex. Hiking Koko Head got me all tired, like go get some grinds from Zippys? Hana Hou (ha-nuh-ho) means a phrase taken from the Hawaiian language, translated it means to do again. Often shouted by audience members at the end of a live musical performance when trying to encourage an encore. EX. That band was so good! Hana hou! Hana hou! Hana hou! The Hawaiian language is made up of 5 vowels and 8 consonants making it the shortest alphabet in the world and very tricky to master. The word 'Aloha' is probably the most widely known Hawaiian word and one of the most important. Not only does Aloha mean hello, goodbye and love, it also means sympathy, kindness, compassion, affection and fondness. ALOHA!

This chicken became popular way back in 1955 when Ernest Morgado barbecued his version of #teriyakichicken at an event he catered. Normally people would manually turn/flip each individual piece of meat but not him. He invented a contraption that literally turned all pieces of chicken at one time, like a rotisserie. Here's where t...he named was coined. Every time he needed to turned the chicken he would yell out "huli" which means to turn and his assistant would yell it back in return. Huli-Huli Chicken was born. Everyone went crazy over the new style of chicken and it became a Hawaii staple ever since. When you visit Hawaii be sure to have some Huli Huli Chicken found at roadside stands, parking lots, restaurants and fundraisers. Enjoy this delicious take on Hawaii's Huli Huli Chicken recipe.... The recipe is enough for about three chickens, split in half. You can use chicken pieces if that’s what you have. Marinate your chicken overnight. 1/3 cup ketchup 1/3 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup sherry 1-2 Tbsp each Paprika and Onion Powder 1-2 Tbsp. sesame oil 1-2-more pieces ginger root, crushed (2 tbsp ginger powder) 3 cloves garlic, crushed Worchestershire sauce to taste Sriracha or Asian chili paste (or red pepper flakes) to taste Squeeze a lemon in if you’ve got one (canned pineapple juice, orange juice or apple cider vinegar) Brush the chicken with the remaining marinade while cooking over a grill or in the oven.
