EDUCATION Arts & Justice Spring 2021 Apply by Feb 5 Grades 912 Free... High school students dive into a world of adventurous art-making with this free virtual after-school program that brings together social justice and the arts. Program runs from March 4 to June 17, 2021.

BMS and members of the Ocean-Hill Brownsville Equity Coalition (OBHEC) were proud participants in The Brownsville Safety Alliance pilot. For five days the NYPD withdrew officers from block length strips of Mother Gaston and flooded the area with a combination of community based organizations and city agencies. This is a great step in setting the tone for the future as we embrace reform and reimagining public safety.

BMS Food Access Initiatives in East Brooklyn

During this virtual live discussion, we will tackle health equity. Our panelist include Dr. Torian Easterling, Danielle Fairbairn Bland, Kassandra Frederique, Councilwoman Alicka Ampry- Samuel, Dr. Shirley Smith, LCSW, PHD, and author Thomas LaVeist. In Ocean Hill - Brownsville, the greatest challenge to equitable health care is the long history of racial discrimination, oppressive policies, disinvestment in public services, and stigmatizing public representations of the co...mmunity. There is substantial evidence demonstrating that health services in our communities tend to be understaffed, underfunded, and under-resourced, with our residents facing greater barriers to access stemming from inability to pay for services, communication barriers, and difficulties in physically accessing services. These issues, compounded by the disastrous storm of COVID-19 infections, has led to higher rates of unemployment, financial instability, and potentially further damage to our community’s health and well- being for generations to come. Therefore, the Ocean Hill - Brownsville Equity Coalition is mobilizing our community and developing a recovery plan focused on healing and setting up the mechanisms that will lead to improved care coordination and health outcomes for all our residents.
