The child’s room and home should reflect a love for Afrocentric culture e.g., filled with Afrikan pictures, sculptures, picture books, music, and the like. Mass-market infant education programs are based on Eurocentric culture and are ultimately designed to serve Eurocentric sociocultural interests, a number of which are inimical to African liberation and prosperity. While the current infant education programs may maintain or accelerate the Afrikan child’s intellectual potential when executed outside of an Afrikan-centered cultural context, his/her intellectual growth and character may be alienated from their Afrikan origins. If such intellectual alienation continues into adulthood, the benefits of its intellectual potential will be lost to Afrikan culture and peoples. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS DR SHANGO BLAKE Nationally known as the Hip Hop Principal, Dr. Shango A. Blake-CEO of TRU SK Consultants, LLC., is a sought after speaker about issues in urban education. This true renaissance educator has been involved with pioneering unique collaborations with students, teachers, parents and the community toward creating and sustaining a vibrant academic atmosphere. In September, an historic gathering took place on the campus of Borough Manhattan Community College (BMCC). Hundreds of Black Teachers, Guidance Counselors, Principals, and Superintendents turned out in force to network with each other and to discuss the plight of Black children. The event titled, A Gathering of Black Educators, was part of a networking event for Black educators primarily from New York City. The program consisted of powerful speeches that were centered around the social, emotional and academic challenges of Black children. Dr. Blake (aka Dr. Blizzy) set the tone for the program by reminding the audience of the pivotal historic role Black educators have played in educating black children. As a Principal, Dr. Blake saw a profound need to institute drastic and creative changes to improve his school’s failing health. Dr. Blake initiated a bold and daring self-created project to integrate a conceptualized Hip-Hop based educational program. This program led to the creation of a new curriculum model that included teacher development, parent involvement, and school/community collaboration. His school went from one of the lowest-performing schools in the district to number one in reading and math. Dr. Blake’s core belief and value is that the best and brightest of America’s students can be found in our inner cities. However, they often have to overcome social barriers that students in more affluent communities do not. This is why his work is grounded in supporting urban school districts leaders and school principals. JOYCE JONES Joyce Jones, producer and host of Suga’ In My Bowl, was introduced to volunteering with WBAI radio by answering the phones in the Tally Room during the membership drives. Before Joyce was granted this monthly music special, she had to learn how to operate the board, gather and edit sound from protests and varying community events that would be contributed to the WBAI Sunday Evening News and the morning news program Wake Up Call, as well as provide and pitch premiums for the membership drives. The first music special was on September 5, 2004, when Tony Ryan allowed Joyce to present a special on producer/arranger/composer Charles Stepney during the Soul Central Station time slot. In 2007, Joyce was granted a more regular monthly slot under the title of Suga’ In My Bowl (a name that was suggested by a friend named Andrew), where it’s been an honor to feature artists such as Nancy Wilson, Lou Donaldson, Patti Austin, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef and many others. Joyce has hosted and provided many of the artists for the live performance segments during WBAI’s International Working Women’s Day programming, which airs every March 8. She has also contributed segments for WBAI’s Hip Hop Takeover. DR. RAY WINBUSH Ray is a research professor and the Director of the Institute for Urban Research. His latest book, Belinda's Petition: A Concise History of Reparations For The Transatlantic Slave Trade (is considered a "prequel" to Should America Pay? Slavery and the Raging Debate on Reparations, and provides an overview of how reparations for the TransAtlantic Slave Trade has been a consistent theme among African people for the past 500 years. BETTY DOPSON Betty J. Dopson Betty J. Dopson was born and raised in Hubbard, Ohio and attended the all white public schools in that small village, The few Blacks students who attended the Elementary and High Schools, mostly from her family, were constantly the subject of and subjected to racist remarks and actions. Marrying and moving to ew York City, she recalls, was like exiting from a long dark tunnel into the light. Obtaining employment at Sydenham Hospital in the early 60’s as an Emergency Room clerk marked the beginning of her work with and for her people. After passing a series of tests she began working as an administrative assistant at Harlem Hospital Center. In 1975 she earned a bachelors degree in Communications Arts and Sciences from Queens College. Shortly after, she was promoted to the position, director of Public Relations at the hospital. While serving in that position she won acclaim by founding Harlem Hospital Babies Day. The event brought international goodwill and financial support to the hospital. Babies from as far away as Japan and South America who were born in Harlem Hospital, returned for the celebration. Publishing the hospital’s newspaper Centerview, recording oral histories from the medical staff for the Schomburg Center Library and producing and hosting a cable TV program, Your Health is Your Responsibility were included in her accomplishments during her employment from 1975 to 1988. In 1975 she hired and worked closely with journalist, A. Peter Bailey to produce a 100 year history of the famous hospital. The truths that were unearthed during research of the hospital’s past were so disturbing to the hospital’s medical and administrative staff that the book was forbidden to be published. There was no desire by the administrative and medical staff to expose the hospital’s history of the use of black patients as guinea pigs. From 1992 to 2006 she served as the director of the SQPA,NY Beacon School, a community jewel created by Mayor David N. Dinkins that offered GED Prep, Computer training, after school math , science and reading for students, ESL for adults and recreational programs. She is proudest of her role as co-founder and co-chair of CEMOTAP, Committee to Eliminate Media Offensive to African People, a 21 year old media watch organization created to monitor and confront offensive electronic and print media. As publisher of its newspaper the CEMOTAP Drum she is able to promote the research, opinions and ideas of the organization. CEMOTAP’s lecture series is shown each week on Cable TV, on Mat Program Series airing every Saturday on QPTV. She is a member of the Board for the Education of People of African Ancestry, The Needles Eye, Women’s Fellowship of St. Albans Congregational Church, The Sisterhood and the Imani Group. Since that bio: Betty has written a well received book called Shared Secrets of Elder Sisters. It was produced as a play also and had a well received run at Queens Black Spectrum Theater. Ms. Dopson now performs excerpts of her book in the form of a 1 woman show at her book signings. Ms. Dopson is a FORMER Co Chair of BEPAA.
