Egon HOSTOVSKY (1908-1973) - who emigrated to the US, lived in New York, died in Montclair, NJ - was a major figure in Czech literature from the 1930s to the '60s. Born into a Jewish family, he became an editor at the Prague-based publishing company Melantrich in the early '30s. His book "House without a Master" will be discussed tonight by Chris Harwood. Please join us at 7pm on Zoom: https://bit.ly/35CTNTh. Hostovsky left Czechoslovakia in 1939, and he ended up in New Yo...rk, seeking a home far from the occupying Germans. He lived in the United States for the duration of the war, while virtually his entire family died in the Nazi death camps. Although he did return to Czechoslovakia, and left in 1950 again and for good. He returned permanently to the U.S. Hostovsky continued writing into the '60s, and served as an editor at Radio Free Europe for five years. He died in Montclair, NJ, in 1973. #culture #CentralEurope #literature #book #bookclub #reading #knowing #Jewish #community #people #history #memory #worldwartwo See more

16 color linocuts were designed by artist VOJTECH PREISSIG and produced for the Wentworth Institute during World War I. The poster calls for Czechoslovaks living in the U.S. to join the Czech legion. The poster was printed in several languages to reach a wider audience: Czech, Slovak, and English. The flags are of the four regions that would become Czechoslovakia in 1918: Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, and Slovakia. The Resistance flag of the Czechoslovak Independence movemen...t is red, white and blue with stars in the middle. As a result of its alliance with the Allied Powers, Czechoslovakia became an independent country in October 1918. Designed and printed at the School of Printing and Graphic Arts of Wentworth Institute, Boston, Mass. Did you know? Two years ago, we planted in NYC with our friends at Friends of Czech Greenways a Linden tree (Czech and also Slovak national tree) to commemorate the centennial of the founding of Czechoslovakia. Has anybody seen our Tree of Liberty? Our friends at Czechoslovak Society of Arts & Sciences -SVU- New York Chapter call for selfies with this tree loved by beekeepers because linden pollen is said to produce really superior honey. It's a great shade tree that doesn't trigger pollen allergies, ideal for urban landscapes because it tolerates a wide range of adverse conditions, including pollution. #community #selfie #share #newyorkcity #joinus #landscape #urbanlandscape #nature

"Alfons Mucha for the 21st Century": art historian Marta Filipova reviews two recent exhibitions and also notices the attempt of institutions to make Mucha relevant as a contemporary product through the sales of Mucha merch. Scarves, calendars and fridge magnets with motifs from his works can be purchased in the exhibition gift shop alongside a special limited-edition of an iMucha & Moët bottle which draws on the success of Mucha’s original posters for the champagne producer featured in the section Bubbly Intoxication. This fusion of the commercial and the artistic is a striking reminder that Mucha was indeed an artist promoting commercial products of all kinds. And it is an important reminder that he himself became a commodity, being nowadays one of the main Prague attractions, next to Kafka, beer, glass ornaments and Jewish sites.

Join us on Sunday afternoon for the magnificent Antonin Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, with Marcy Rosen on cello, and the late Maurice Peress conducting the Aaron Copland School of Music Orchestra. Dvorak’s fertile American output climaxed with this Cello Concerto, composed toward the end of his residency and directorship at the National Conservatory of Music of America, in early 1895.
