Barrel Aged by @abandonedcider of Parksville, NY 12 oz can, 6.5% abv Going with a tried and true classic tonight. Few cider makers consistently hit the spot as well as something from these guys. Delightful vanilla notes linger in the middle, awash amongst gloriously dry yet flavorful apples that may have once worried they would not fulfill their destiny. Some light tannin, and no real acidity makes for one happy esophagus to pair with a set of happy taste buds. Wild Rose by @wildcraftcider of Eugene, OR Apple & Rose Bud cider, 500ml bottle, 6.7% abv, 0 sugar As #dryciderjanuary comes to a conclusion, it's only appropriate to send it out with one banger of a cider. When I first came into cider drinking, I always presumed Rose was made with roses... however I learned that was not the case. That being said, Sean and the gang decided to make my past presumptions come true! The cider is fermented 3 months, then cold conditioned ...on fresh, local rose buds. So with all that now known, what exactly do we have here? Quite an interesting little piece, that's what. Upon opening, it's the usual with Wildcraft: a nice dose of west coast tannin. However, immediately to follow was something...not sure what but it reminded me of pickles. Thought that was strange, but I carried on. First sip was floral, like I was eating flowers floral. But also lip tingling dry. Like, Atacama dry. Unlike some places that make super dry cider that has literally no flavor left, this has some nice features to follow. The apple is there, but for me it was a bit light. Tannin certainly too, but again, more mild than usual. These are not knocks, just observations. Brut Nature by @edenciders of Newport, VT 375ml bottle 8% ABV, 0% residual sugar As #dryciderjanuary is wrapping up, I would be remiss if I didn't include a selection from one of the best dry cider makers around. Part of a tasting kit I ordered last year, the tasting notes that were supplied I've managed to misplace, so enjoy my version instead! ... Nice foamy head on pour, with the head being slow to dissipate. Oddly enough, I found this didn't pair well with food at all. Both times I ate something before having a sip, this gave the sensation of an older, syrupy cider...not at all what this is or what you experience otherwise. On those non tainted sips, you get strong, crisp flavorful notes. They list on the back the apple variety, and while I'll not name them all here, its a diverse list with some heavy hitters like Kingston Black, Rhode island greening and Yarlington Mill. Tannin and bitter yet enjoyable, with nary a hint of sweetness, but enjoyably bubbly and a relaxing mouthfeel. Behind Blue Eyes by @underthebridgecider of Lebanon, PA Apple/Blueberry cider. 375ml bottle, 9.2% abv After last night's video, I decided I was still on a bit of a blueberry kick, and luckily I had this around to satisfy those cravings. I was curious about this...that ABV is just mean looking! ... Has a bountiful aroma full of fruit and alcohol! First sip will definitely knock you back a bit! Drinks like a spirit, with an ever present taste of alcohol, but underneath that, you find a complex layer of flavourful ingredients. The apple is there, but I personally found more blueberry actually! This is super dry...I think the sheet said they fermented all their stuff to 0RS so would make sense. After this warms up a bit, the teeth dull a bit and this becomes a tad more approachable in terms of extra alcohol taste. That being said, it's still best enjoyed over a few hours. Hit the spot though!
