Dear friends, We're heading into a bit of a cocoon this summer, to reflect on the events of the past few months and think about the best way to go forward. We intend to return with virtual tours in the fall, and will make that announcement here in early September. At that point we will know more about whether/how to go about offering in-person tours as well. ... One thing we know for sure: we will see you soon, in whatever form that takes. Thank you for being so supportive during these last few months. We look forward to coming back stronger than ever, with more stories, new tours, deeply researched tales, and newly unearthed, inclusive and expansive histories and ghostly tales. Stay safe, we love you, see you soon. XO, Boroughs of the Dead [Photo: Gates of Green-Wood Cemetery, June 2020]

Our hearts are heavy this week. We're offering a virtual tour of "The Magic and Mysticism of Central Park" this Saturday and we know it has been our privilege to walk freely through the Ramble on many occasions. We do not take this lightly. We're also offering a free virtual tour this Thursday of "Frights and Phantoms of Flushing," a look at the ghostly side of one of the country's most historically rich neighborhoods. Flushing, Queens was the site of one of America's first protests. The Flushing Remonstrance of 1657 set a precedent for religious freedom. Protest works. If you'd like to join us, you can register here: https://boroughsofthedead.com/virtual-tours/

Hart Island was established as New York City's potter's field, or mass burial ground, in 1869. It's been getting a lot of press lately, as the coverage of Covid deaths and burials on the island has brought it back into the public's attention. But what is a potter's field exactly? Who runs it? Can you visit it? What is it all about? Join us for illustrated discussion and Q&A, as Boroughs of the Dead guides cover a brief history of Hart Island, then open up the discussion to an...swer your questions about the island, from how the city manages its dead to what the future holds for this unique place. This talk is hosted by Boroughs of the Dead founder Andrea Janes and BotD tour guide Marie Carter. It is a free event, but donations are accepted; any donations received will be given to support needy New Yorkers affected by COVID-19. Registration is required to receive the Zoom meeting ID info, which will be emailed to attendees 24 hours before the tour.
